Question about 2003 GMC Yukon XL

Rattling sound in steering (at low speeds)

My car (Yukon XL 2003) makes a rattling sound at low speeds especially when turning a corner.
The sound appears to come from inside the steering or maybe the driver side wheel.

Same problem...rattling sound when making low speed turns. It sounds as if the noise is coming from the driver-side front corner.

I eventually took the car to a mechanic.

I left the car with him so I don't know exactly what he did. But I do know that he removed the steering column. I believe he then cleaned it and re-greased it.

This solves the problem for about 10,000 km or so. The problem has recently started to come back but still not as bad as it was before.

    The cost was minimal.

I sounds like you need to grease the intermediate shaft. GM sells a kit that consists of a plug and a bag of grease for around $18. It has been a few years since I bought it so the price could have went up. They also offer an update shaft for around $100. I am nearly 100% sure this is your problem. I have a 03 Yukon and have done it 3 times in 120,000 miles.

There are a few other posibilities, but they are not so cheap. The next logical problem could be the power steering pump or the valve in the gear box.

2004 gmc yukon rattling and pinging under hood and inside. Loud inside and sounds like it's fluid moving with the rattle. Not wet inside of the truck.

These engines don't rattle and especially ping unless they are hot. And the sound of fluid thru the heater core. Tells me you are low on coolant. The engine is not cheap to replace.

We have a 2003 yukon denali xl and just turned real hard to back out of a field and now you can hardly turn steering wheel to drive..

Have you checked the power steering belt and the fluid level in the power steering reservoir? The belt may be slipping or the hard turn may have caused a leak in one of the hoses that power the unit.

When driving at slow speed especially, a very loud squeel comes from the front end of my 2003 youkon xl denali. the sound goes away when the brakes are applied.

Check the brake pads. There is a metal tab on the pads called an indicator. When the pads get low the indicators will start to rub and make an annoying screech to let you know it's time to replace the pads. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll do my best to answer them. Thank you for using!

There is a horrible rattling noise in the front end of our 03 gmc yukon xl. i think the 4wd linkage is broken.

It sounds more like a possibly bad CV joint in an axle shaft or internal differential problem. There is no mechanical linkage to the front axle, its all electronically controlled. The front suspension is pretty good there aren't a lot of rattle type noises created from it. I need more info to diagnose better. Does it do it only moving? or stopped? over bumps only? in 4wd only? while turning? certain gears or speed only?

Very hard to steer wheel in my 2003 gmc yukon and there is plenty of steering fuid in it

Turn car off - Remove power steering cap, and turn streering wheel hard right or left and fluid should pour out (cover surroundings with rags.) If so, check your power steering pump.
