Question about 1985 GMC K1500

1985 GMc sierra boggs out at idle

Ok my truck was bogging out and had no pick up i changed the plugs. they smelled of gas so i thought ok prob. fixed when i started it up it makes a hissing noise almost like a vacume leak and is sucking gas fast like it is just draining it. also it stalls out when i have to stop at a light or take my foot offf the gas. PLEASE any help would be great i need a cheap easy fix here lol thanks
oh it is a 1985 gmc sierra and it is a stick

    ok what does qjunk mean the carb aint that old are they really expensive to replace? i think the carb is about a year or so old

    someone told me to take the needle out and clean it very carefully that could be the problum. not sure i am not that much of a car guru i have replaced alot of parts in this car thus far and am trying to get it running for the time being for *** cheap as i can i really appreciate all the info thanks

    ok we cleaned the carb really well and it is not sucking gas bad it is still sputtering you were right it as a holly 4 barrel 600. my husband set it is set at a half turn. but it is still sputtering hard please tell me what else it could be thank you

Sounds to me that the carb. is bad, most likely its a Qjet, best thing to do here is to have it rebuilt, but better yet get a replacement, unless you know someone that will rebuild it for you witch i dought, they don't call them Qjunk for nothing.

    Ok what i ment by Qjet is Quadajet is the brand name of the carberator that came on that truck when it was new. But you say someone already replaced it, so now i got to figure out what it is, i am going to say its a Holley carberator, if it is than i would have to say the flote is most likely set to high and thats the reason its running rich or getting to much gas. Get back to me and let me know if thats what it is, and i can tell you how to fix it. It should have the name printed on the carb. and also the size for example 500, 550, 600, 650 c.f.m.

    Now you said he set it at half a turn, but you did not say what, i am asumming you mean the flote. Ok on the front of carb there is the flot bowl on the side of bowl there is a screw that you take out, thats what you look into to see the level of the gas, on top of bowl there is another screw with a lock nut, you loosen the lock nut and turn the inner screw in or out to ajust flote, the best way to ajust it is when its running if you can keep it running, you want the level of gas right at the bottom of the screw hole on side of bowl, on newer carbs they have a sight glass instead of a screw. Now next to the screw hole on side of bowl there are small screws that you can turn in and out to ajust air and fuel mixture. If you have any more questions witch i'am sure you will just ask and i'll try my best to help you. I work 2nd shift so i am on from 8 to 12 E.S.T. in the mornings, and after work 11:30 p.m.till ?

Rought idle then boggs out and shuts off.


I would start with changing the plugs, especially if they are original. If doing yourself, make sure to use anti-seize on threads of new plugs, gap plugs to manufacturer specs, and properly torque plugs to manufacturer specs.
Also, if it has been sitting for a while, change fuel filter, oil, and top off with fresh gas.

use a scanner sound like a bad sensor .mass air flow - map sensor - coolant sensor. check vacuum line to fuel pressure regulator if wet with gas replace fuel pressure regulator. make sure yours spark pluge the right heat range. also change air filter. check charcoal canister. check oxygen sensor and egr valve. make sure its not stuck open.

Nic, If the carburetor was dumping gas, remove the engine oil dip stick and see if it smells like gasoline. If it does you will need to change the oil.
Second, go back over your spark plug wires and verify they are on the correct spark plug. Start with the #1 plug wire, the firing order is 1,8,4.3.6.5.7.2...

Just a thought, have you checked yout TPS(throttle position sensor)? I had similar problems with my 89 GMC Jimmy 4.3l, however a code 44 is strange. Also check to see if your problems go away if you advance the timing a few degree's.
