Have you checked to see that all of the wiring has been re-connected after the engine replacement? On the transfer case, there will likely be a terminal. You may find a loose wire on the wiring loom close by. This would explain why the electrically operated auto locking hubs AND the indicator light are not working. Posted as clarification request as a suggestion. Good luck!

i have a 1990 4x4 3.0 v6 was riding in the woods and everything was working fine till i climbed a hill and then the front wheels stopped pulling. drive shaft is fine but it does need a driver side cv axle which i have but havent put it on yet. im not sure what makes the hubs lock in since they are automatic.

97 4 runner wont move,no noises just like your in nuteral.Fluid is fine i can move it in 4x4 what can i look for before my girl tells me to dump it

To understand you
the car runs but when you engage drive it doesn't move
however if you move the selector from 2 wheel drive to 4 wheel drive it does move
is that correct
logically if that is the case the auto transmission is working but the drive to the rear wheels is not functioning
That would point to a problem in the , diff connection ( broken rear axle )
by engaging 4 wheel drive you are moving by the front diff only

Trans troubleshooting

If you are driving in 4 wheel drive on hard surface then you have drive line torque lock up as there is no centre diff to allow the front and rear wheels to equalise out the torque . 4 wheel drive is for use when on dirt / snow / ice where the differences between the front and back are allowed to slip the tyres . Jack up a rear wheel and allow the torque to dissipate by rotating a wheel . A point from all 4x4 manufacturers is that you NEVER drive in 4 wheel drive unless you are on dirt or ice/snow conditions. You have probably been getting away with it as any bump that lifts a wheel from the road surface will allow the wheel to slip. Even running the tyre on the white painted line on the road or any wet patch on the road will help ease the torque loading

1990 Suzuki Escudo 4 wheel drive

As far as I know the procedure should go something like this...

Stop the vehicle, engage the parking brake and if applicable, get out and turn the hubs on the front wheels from Free, to Lock.(You may not have these on a Suzuki, they may be auto-lockers)

Get back in the vehicle and put the transmission shift selector into Neutral.

If you have a manual transfer case, move the selector-shaft to 4x4-High, or 4x4-Low -- whichever is desired. Now, putting the vehicle in gear with the transfer case is sometimes somewhat difficult. As long as the vehicle's transmission is in neutral, don't worry, the gears inside the transfer case are big and beefy -- Don't be afraid to be rough -- Again as long as the transmission is in neutral. You may also have to disengage the parking brake and slightly let the vehicle roll forward or back with your foot-brake to get the Transfer case to lock into place.

Once 4x4 of the selected High, Or Low range is selected, usually indicated by the vehicle jerking slightly with a slightly loud clank/thud. Move the Transmission selector out of neutral into your desired gear (Drive if Automatic, if Manual, whichever gear you pull out from). and voila! You should now be in 4-Wheel-Drive.

To disengage 4-Wheel-Drive. Just reverse the steps.
