Check EGR valve and sensor it might be carbon up or stuck and the sensor might be bad.
EGR valve and sensor connected to it control idle at start up.

Tach

is the truck actually running at 3500 or does it just go there and stay there. If it just goes there and stays there follow the wires runnig from tach into motor bay sometimes get burnt or there may be a short somewhere

Defective tachometer and speedometer

Do the following:1)key in the ON position:remove the 7.5 gauge fuse.Tach needle should read "0:". 2)put it back,go on the engine and unplug the green plug on the igniter -the big one, with 5 or 6 wires on it.The needle on tach reading should be zero.If not you have a short circuit on the black wire between that plug and the plug on the conbination meter.3) If the reading is zero with the plug disconnected, the black wire for the tach is short-circuited inside the igniter. Tachometer not working on 1999 mercury villager

his problem is caused by the failure of the circuit board that operates the tach needle, you will have to remove the instrument panel then the tach from the panel and send it out for repair to an authorized Nissan electronics repair center, contact your local dealer for the name and number.

Sounds like it could be the throttle position sensor.

IT'S A BLUE WIRE ON THE BACK OF THE CONNECTOR THAT WOULD NORMALLY GO TO THE FACTORY TACHOMETER IN THE DASH. YOU HAVE TO REMOVE THE DASH GAUGE CLUSTER TO GET AT THE CONNECTOR. THE CONNECTOR WILL NOT BE PLUGGED INTO ANYTHING IF YOU DON'T HAVE A FACTORY TACHOMETER (DX, CX, HX ETC...YOU WILL HAVE TO SPLICE INTO OR CUT THE BLUE WIRE FROM THE PLUG. IT GOES TO TACH SIGNAL WIRE ON YOUR NEW TACH.
