Question about 2002 Dodge Caravan

1 Answer

Engine hesitation in gear.

I have a 2002 Dodge caravan 2.4 L 41te. Van was idling fine, then when stopped at light would hesitate on take off. Then started running rough all the time. Put vacuum gauge on EGR valve would bleed down, replaced it seemed to help a little bit, but still hesitated on take off. Put scanner on it showed no faults, got aggravated unplugged ISC to make it throw a fault, it did'nt. But of all things engine ran smoother and when I put it in gear would not hesitate one bit. With ISC plugged in engine rpm was 850-956 unplugged, it was roughly 950 1050 rpm. TPS was 16.8 closed 76.8 wide open. Why does'nt it throw a fault with ISC unplugged, and why is it running better with Isc unplugged. This is rather confusing to me.

Our "New Used" 2002 Dodge Caravan is doing the same thing. What is the ISP?

I have the exact same problem... it seems to be getting worse, when the vehicle is cold, it will hesitate and die multiple times, once it is warmed up it seems to run fine

Our 1995 Dodge caravan starts fine dies.

Do the following

Here are the most common causes of idle surge, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake

Van is sputtering when in gear; reverse or drive

It could be dirty injector but my money is on a bad throttle position sensor. I have had to replace one on every dodge car/ van i every had, around 90-100k miles. about 55 dollars, most people could do this them self.

2004 dodge caravan 2.4 Hesitates during Acceleration and at idele

You should definitely replace the fuel filter though this probably won't fix your hesitation. It wouldn't hurt to replace the spark plugs this is usually the culprit on these engine. I have the same engine in a '99 caravan and found the for some reason the spark plugs on cylinder 3 and 4 loosen up after one year and cause a misfire between 45 and 50 mph under load (when mildly accelerating).

1997 dodge caravan p 1495 code

if I am not mistaken that is the code for the engine temp sensor, it kind of works as a choke, it tell the computer the ngine temp so it can lean out the fuel mix. I think the code says engine is taking too long to warm up. A faulty sensor will read -40 C all the time

Dumb question: where is the pcv valve

PCV Valve sits on one of the Valve Covers.

Side Question: Sounds kinda like a tune up is in order. Plugs wires fuel filter.

Hope this helps! Let me know if you need more help!
