Cutlass won't turn over - battery checked

1995 Cutlass Supreme

For two years now, sometimes when I attempt to start my car, there is no clicking sound or attempt for the starter to turn over and I routinely have to jiggle the gear selector or fasten my seat belts, try again.... bla bla bla... and it starts right up.

During the past three weeks, when I started the car, it has seemed to crank a little slower but I attributed it to colder weather. Then in mild weather, it cranked so slowly that it almost didn't start. I drove it around for a few minutes to see if it would charge and when I got back it turned over normally and started right up.

Two days later, I attempted to start it but it turned over really slowly and finally didn't turn over at all. Since then, any time I try to start it, the dash board lights come on but it does not turn over and my headlights dim all the way down.

I thought it was the battery. (Note: the battery cables [side screw] had no corrosion and were tight). Took the battery out and to a parts store where a lady put it on a comuterized tester. The directions right there on the machine said that it would give the results after 6 minutes, however the lady left it on there thirty mintues and told me the battery was good and it was now fully charged. (She was in a bad mood and I didn't want to question her).

I put it right back in my car; , but then ... the exact same thing. Didn't turn over or make a clicking noise but the dashboard lights come on and the headlights dim all the way down.

I am now starting to wonder about the battery test results.

What should I try next? Its in a parking garage in a difficult location, but should I try to see if I can get a car near enough to jump it off, or maybe even take the battery in for a second opinion? Or does it sound like something else like the starter going bad?

Take the battery to the nearest AutoZone. if it tests good, your next step would be to change the battery cables (the cables can corrode on the inside, turning a green color) or the ignition switch could be the problem. with a 15 year old car time isn't on your side.

Check your transmission fluid level. If it is low, you probably have a leak that needs to be repaired. Otherwise, it sounds like transmission overhaul time to me.

I have a 95 cutlass and sometimes it don't start. I turn the ignition and the lights etc come on but that's it. I don't even get any "click" from the starter likes its trying to start. What I have noticed...

I had the same problem with my 1995 Cutlass Supreme. Finally it would not start at all and I noticed the security light on the dash would not go off after I turned the key. It wound up being the ignition switch. I replaced it and no problems. The only trouble is that your old ignition keys do not work with the new switch.

It sounds like a bad thermostat, but you could have excessive air in the system also. Thier is an air bleed screw on the thermostat housing that is used for bleeding the system. I would also check your cooling fans, to do this easily turn your ac on max setting and check to see if the fans are spinning. when the ac is on max the fans should be spinning all the time.

Car died the other day, and now it wont start. Everything such as dash and radio seem to be working fine.

hi there the things to check are do you have a spark at the plugs?
do you have compression ?
are the cam shafts turning?
is the cam belt intact?
this are all needed to make the engine run it will turn over great but not start with this things not working infact if the last 3 are not there it will sound diffrent when you are turning it over with the key.

Car won't start!!! & ABS Light on

Sounds like carbon build up on the contacts inside the electrical ignition switch which is not the key cylinder. Its located on the lower steering coluum if coluum shift or if you have a floor shift it will be inside the console

Car won't start!!!

mine is doing the same... all i did was reconnect the battery...and it worked fine...but know my hood wont open!!! so i cant fix the cable on the battery!!! i pull on the darn cable so hard and the hood still wont budge!!!

94 cutlass supreme wont start

It sounds a Lot like you have some Trash inside the Fuel Tank .Also, Check the Fuel Filter and Starter.
