Question about 1999 Ford Contour
This is quite a chore, you have to lift the engine to do it:
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Remove the water pump pulley shield.
Install engine support device to the engine lifting eyes and support the engine.
Raise and safely support the vehicle.
Remove the exhaust crossover and the exhaust retaining bracket located on the right side of the oil pan.
Remove the exhaust heat shield retaining nuts and the exhaust heat shields from the left side of the oil pan.

This is a really time consuming and fairly difficult job to do due to the fact you have to remove so many things just to get to the oil pan. I have done this before and it took me a couple hard days of work to get it finished. I would really recommend taking it to a shop having it done by professionals. It really should be done up on a lift and requires you to remove the exhaust system, a couple of O2 sensors , the y pipe and catalytic converter assembly, the torque converter cover plate, and the starter just to get to the oil pan. Removing and reinstalling the oil pan itself was fairly easy but I had a really hard time removing the bolts from the exhaust system. The exhaust flange connecting the y pipe to the flex pipe had to be cut off and a new flange had to be welded on to each side due to the bolts being so rusted and corroded they hardly even looked like bolt anymore. If you are still wanting to do it yourself just let me know and I will give you the step by step directions to get the oil pan off. Also you would have to let me know which engine you have in your taurus the 24v DOHC or the 12v OHC. I hope this helps you out.
