  1. Apply and fully release the park brake several times. Verify that the park brake lever releases completely.
  2. Turn ON the ignition. Verify the red BRAKE warning lamp is not illuminated.
  3. If the red BRAKE warning lamp is illuminated, verify the following:
    • The park brake lever is in the fully released position and against the stop.
    • There is no slack in the park brake cable.
  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disable the SIR system.
  3. Remove the front floor console.
  4. With the park brake lever in the released position, using ONLY hand tools, loosen the adjusting nut completely to the end of the front cable threaded rod.
  5. Raise and support the vehicle.
  6. Remove the rear tire and wheel assemblies.
  7. Adjust the rear drum brakes.
  8. Ensure there is no brake shoe drag after adjustment by rotating the brake drums. If drag exists, re-center the brake shoes and perform the brake shoe adjustment again.
  9. Install 2 wheel nuts to the wheel studs and firmly hand tighten in order to retain the brake drums.
  10. Lower the vehicle to permit access to the park brake lever.
  11. Raise the park brake lever 1 detent position. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

this sounds like a brake issue and usually the emergency brake..lift rear of car to see if the wheels will turn if one does turn .remove tire and loosen brake bleeder screw to see if you can release brake pressure.after that tighten bleeder screw and remove brake drum.if the wheel has disc brakes you will need to remove emergency brake cable if it is too tight to remove you need a new one anyway so take a hack saw and cut the cable at the brake unit

My avalanche emergency brake is real loose how do u fix that

If the pedal is loose (gets to the floor), you can tighten the cable itself under the truck. There is an adjustment bolt where the main cable splits into 2 (where it splits to get to either side). You will find that bolt along the driver side, behind the driver. If the brake don't grab, there is an adjustment wheel on one side of the park brake shoe brake cylinder. They have a tendancy to rust and seize up but are easily removed, clean and put back together. Good luck.

Emergency Brake light comes on intermittently while driving

most cases it would just be a ground wire that is loosing connection and gaining it back. other times it can be that the e-brake needs to be tightened up. i wouldnt worry to much about the e-brake coming on while your driving unless you notice there is a problem when the car is starting to drive. i would look at the whole e-brake system starting with the cables and working my way back to the shoes and drums. maybe all you need to do is just fine tune it a little

How do I adjust the parking brake cable on a 1991

If the car has a center console between the seats, and the e-brake lever is there, remove the console there should be a bolt to tighten or loosen. Loosen it with the lever DOWN, pull the cable as tight as it will go with your hand and a pair of pliers. Holding the cable in place tighten the bolt or nut that secures the cable. If this doesn't fix it, have your rear brakes inspected and/or adjusted.

Need to tighten emergency brake on 1997 toyota 4runner

if you need to tighten the cable under the vehicle you will find where the single cable from the front connects to the two rear to tighten set the emergency brake six to seven clicks and tighten nut until the brakes catch. if you need to adjust the actually brakes in the drum set the ebrake the same setting find the little rubber plug on the backing plate remove get a small flat head screw driver and flash light find the little gear inside use the screwdriver to turn will only go one way turn the gear until brakes grab and wheel can't be turned.

Adjusting the emergency cable. I have just installed new brake shoes, rotors and pads. Now the emergency cable doesn't work anymore. Could you please tell me how to adjust it so that my emergency brake...

it will be a simple wrench adjustment on the cable itself, the cable should run underneath the driver side of the vehicle. You will see an adjustment area with a cable connected to a piece of all-thread that has a nut on it, generally, tightening this setup tightens the cable, loosening looses up the cable

Emergency brake

Under your Escape next to your frame rail. You will have a cable with a long metal bracket. In that bracket will be two long threaded rods with nuts on them. Use some thread loosing spray(WD40). Then tighten the nuts. Tighten them a little at a time and check your brake. You don’t want to tighten them to much.
