Question about 1995 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera

1 Answer

My 1995 olds cutlass cierra will not stay running.

I replaced the battery when I noticed the charge light on the dash was on. The car will fire up and idle just fine, but after about 15 minutes, will die. The battery is dead after it dies. I had the alternator checked by a professional, which he said was fine. I checked the voltage at the battery terminals while the car is idling and got 14 volts, so I'm sure it's not the alternator or it's wires. What else could it be?

Do I do the test from the negative or positive post?

  • efeske Feb 24, 2009

It doesn't make sense that there would be a draw on the electrical system since the problem only arises when the car is running. Is it possible that one of the systems is drawing all the electricity the car can produce? And if so, how do you determine what system is drawing while the car is running?

Found the problem. There was a fried connector about 8" from the battery on the positive cable. It appears to be the positive lead from the alternator to the battery. Chances are, when I replaced the battery, the connector came loose and the electricity had to arc. Sure would explain the intermittent voltage at the battery and the fried connector! Thanks for helping trouble shoot!

car should stay running with battery not connected , have charging system double checked and do a draw test for short in electrical system , are you near empty lots or large field , rats chew wire insulation , double check for wiring damage

there has to be a short , maybe the starter is still engaged after starting , battery will have to be hot to drain in 15 minutes , unless it is a new defect

I have 1995 olds cutlass cierra s with 3300 v6, dies when warm, rest for about 15 min and starts up till warm. replaced ignition module, o2 sensor, fuel filter, fuel pump, air filter. i've worn out my...

the most common problem next is the crank sensor. use a heat light to warm up the sensor to see if it is that. by using a heat light you can narrow down what part has the temperature glitch. Don't forget to try the engine computer.

My daughters hand me down 1995 olds cutlass ciera has 103,000 miles. It was grandmas and well maintained. It has started shutting off while driving. No rhyme or reason....

One possibly/likely problem is that the ignition circuit is cutting out. I had this same issue on a car (malibu) and found it was an intermittent ignition switch connection. Replacing the ignition switch fixed it for good.
One thing that will really help you is to notice you dash lights when this happens. If the dash lights go out when the car stops, then this is it. If the dash lights (ignition) stay on, then you have another issue.

How do I change out headlight bulb on 91 olds cutlass cierra

Behind the headlight, you should see the nylon bulb holder. Turn it counter clockwise, about a 1/4 turn, and it should come out. Pull the old bulb straight out, and replace it with the new one. Don't touch the glass part of the new bulb with bare fingers, or you'll be replacing it again. Use cotton gloves or a paper towel. Put the holder back in the headlight, turn it clockwise until it locks.
