Wondering if someone has ever had this problem....my car key gets stuck in the ignition because the gear shift is not in park all the way. When parking, I have to make sure I hear a "click" sound from the gear shift so I know it's in park all the way and my key will come out...anyone have any advice on how to fix this????

Most if not all vehicles have a
Electronic Park Lock (EPL)/Ignition Lock Cylinder Control Actuator: If the vehicle is equipped with automatic transmission and a floor mounted console gear shift, it has an ignition lock cylinder control actuator system in the steering column. The ignition lock cylinder control actuator purpose is to prevent the ignition key from being turned to the OFF position when the transmission is in any position other than PARK and the vehicle may still be moving. The column ignition lock system consists of an ignition lock cylinder control actuator, and a park position switch that is located in the automatic transmission shift lock control switch. The ignition lock cylinder control actuator contains a pin that is spring loaded to mechanically prevent the ignition key cylinder from being turned to the lock position when the vehicle transmission is not in the PARK position. If vehicle power is lost, and/or the transmission is not in the PARK position the operator will not be able to turn the ignition key to the lock position and will not be able to remove the ignition key from the column. Or it has
Linear Shift Assembly: If the vehicle is equipped with a column mounted gear shift, it has a linear shift assembly on the steering column. The linear shift assembly has a cable that runs from the linear shift assembly to the ignition lock cylinder case. The purpose of this cable is to prevent the ignition key from being turned to the OFF position when the transmission is in gear and the vehicle may still be moving. The linear shift assembly cable contains a pin that is spring loaded to mechanically prevent the ignition key cylinder from being turned to the lock position when the vehicle transmission is not in the PARK position. If vehicle power is lost, and/or the transmission is not in the PARK position the operator will not be able to turn the ignition key to the lock position and will not be able to remove the ignition key from the column.
Your best bet is to take it to a ASE certified repair shop or the dealer ! The fix involves taking the steering column apart an or the floor shifter assembly ! Also electrical test to determine what is the problem !
There is a (silly) safety lock on the ignition to stop it starting in gear, or the key being removed if not in park, and a sensible safety lock on the gear shift to stop kids letting it roll down a hill. Try putting your foot firmly on the brake, press the park release button beside the gear shift, while pulling the shifter out of park and back into park.
Getting the key out: Sometimes the steering wheel is placing pressure on the steering lock and key release mechanism, so try turning the steering wheel in any direction it can go while trying to release the key. It should come only out when you are in park.
your shifting pattern seams off , as follows P R N D D1 D2,
Will it go into any gears closer to park ? did you try turning steering wheel , next I would look under at tranny linkage to see if there is something stopping it. that will require 2 people 1 in truck and 1 underneath.
There is a small cable attached to the shift lever that runs up to the ignition switch on the steering column. If it gets stuck, your shift lever won't move out of park and your key can get stuck and you won't be able to pull it out.
Drop the steering column down and detach the cable to free up your shifter and/or key. Make sure to replace it as soon as possible as it is a safety feature.
see my friend easy fix,the problem you are having is a wire problem that locks or unlocks the shifter from the park potition and also unlocks the key from the ignition switch is just getting stuck inside the ignition switch, so more likely needs lubrication you can do it yourself or have a machanic do it
for you, maybe replace it with a new one( wich i dont think is nesesary) take it out clean it, put new grease and it should be good to go, good luck. This wire is conected to the ignition switch, on the right side and can be pulled out with your hand.
My daughter drives a Suzuki, my solution to her is: while the gear shift lever is in park, lightly put pressure on the gear shift lever, through the park position and while pressing the gear shift towards park light rock left to right while trying to remove the key.
The interlock between the transmission and the ignition switch needs to be adjusted/ repaired or replaced.
