Ok bouncing idle means that you have a sensor that is on your Intake manifold that is acting up. It will not show on your code reader because it tells the computer it is acting right. Look around the intake manifold area and you will see it attatched. It is commonly called the throttle positioning sensor. It can be taken out and clean up on the contact surface with very fine sandpaper.

ok see if you can take the top cover off the air intake and start it. This will produce a bigger amount of air to maybe counter act with the rich fuel.

What is the whining noise when driving, when I press on the gas it will stop?

Does it sound like a foghorn? My wife's 2001 Navigator was doing the same thing, turned out to be the mass airflow sensor. I did not buy a new mass air flow sensor, I went to advanced auto and bought a can of mass air flow sensor cleaner. That worked for us.

Running rich/lean

Knowing the year make and model is important so that we can know what engine and computer it has. I am thinking mass air flow sensor. It can cause a rich and then lean code. Tapping on the mass airflow sensor while trying to start it can change things and possibly make it start. By the way, you have a bad mechanic if they havent found the problem by now. Always get the actual code from the shop or Autozone. For your engine it will be something like P0---. It will have 4 digits. You may have the P0171, P0172. Unfortunately there are several things that can cause this. Whe your car is running open the hood and check for a hissing noise. It may be a vacuum leak from a pcv hose.

I took my cadillac catera for an emissions test and it failed. They said it failed due to these to codes: P0171 and P0174. What do the codes mean?

Diagnostic Test Code (DTC) P0171 and P0174 are both "LEAN OXYGEN SENSOR" codes. One is for one side of the engine and the other is for the other side of the engine.

To put it simply, you have too much oxygen in your exhaust on BOTH sides of the engine at the same time.
This can be caused by a number of things including vacuum leaks, low fuel pressure, or a bad Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor or Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor.
This should be diagnosed using a scan tool that can read fuel trim data so that an effective repair can be made and verified.

Please note that it is HIGHLY UNLIKELY that these codes are being caused by the oxygen sensors themselves.

Replaced mass airflow sensor in 2001 tacoma twice. Is their a way to clean, bypass, etc. new unit lasts about two months, ie engine light comes back on and mechanic is ready to replace sensor, clean...

If the new unit only lasted a couple of months, and the engine light goes back on, I think that you should try to have it replaced at the auto parts store under their 90 day warranty policy, if they have that.

Try to go to a reputable source such as Autozone or Advance Auto Parts where they have a more liberal return and refund policy.

Usually, a MAF sensor once replaced shouldn't go bad in such a short time span.

Maybe, check that the voltage to the MAF sensor is not too much for the sensor, causing it to go bad. If that's the case, the computer reference signal voltage may be the culprit.

Good luck on this repair.

I get codes P0102 and P1128. My mechanic says I need to put a new mass air flow sensor on and it will take care of the problem. Is this correct?

This could very well be correct I believe code P0102 is the mass airflow circuit low input. P1128 should be a lean code.

I would first try cleaning your mass airflow sensor with a carb or throttle body cleaner, they have a tendency to get dirty and not read correctly.
