Hi, this is just a reset issue. sometimes the CPU can become confused. the original warning that informed you about your gas cap is still in the cpu's memory. you will have to reset the cpu and, this will clear the warning. After the reset, it will stay off. chevy cpu's tend to do this from time to time.

Another thing that will trigger the "Service engine soon" light is starting the vehicle and putting it into gear before all the test lights on the dash have gone out. They are testing for certain parameters and when you put it into gear early, those parameters are not reached. The computer sees it as a fault. Normally, it 5 - 6 restarts to reset this. The key must be removed between each start.

Battery not holding charge, recently changed alternator, and put new battery, car ran fine. then was forced to park car and not use. car satfor 4-5 months then the problems started

Hi Gene:
I'd suggest trying to start from the beginning with this.
Try disconnectinf the battery and charging it fully.
When you re-connect it, the "service engine light" may not be on . that would be nice. If there is a problem the light will come back on. Make sure the gas cap is screwed on tight.
The battery not holding a charge is ypically a separate problem from the service engine light.

What does the service engine soon mean on my 2004 dodge Dakota

Take your vehicle down to one of the auto-part chain stores. They will plug in an ODB-II Code Reader for you, for free.

That will give you the problem code(s) causing the light to come on, and you will be well on your way to fixing the problem.

Sometimes something as simple as a loose gas-cap one time can cause the light to activate and stay on.

Engine light,

99% of the time, the gas cap wasn't tightened properly, or is leaking. Make sure you twist it tight and it clicks a few times. If the "Check Engine" light stays on after a few days, buy a new gas cap. Again it may take a few days to clear.

Why does service engine soon with gas cap code keep coming on even after buying new gas cap?

Get gas cap from dealer as some vehicles are having issues with the after market caps. What is the actual code and what's the vehicle year, make and model?

What does it mean when engine light is on

Hi George:
If the "Check Engine" light came on soon after a fill-up at a gas station, check if your gas cap is closed properly. If the gas cap wasn't on tight, this could be the problem. Secure the gas cap properly and if there is no other problems, the "Check Engine" light should clear itself out in a few days of driving. If the gas cap was tight, there is some other problem. Have your car computer scanned to see what is wrong. It could be some minor problem, but it also could be something more serious that can cause more damage to your vehicle if not repaired in time. Some garages or parts stores often offer to scan your computer for free. Others will charge you a diagnostic fee. If your car is fairly new, I'd advise to visit your dealer for this, because it's possible that the problem is still covered by the original warranty and can be repaired for free or a minimum charge. Check your owner's manual for more details.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Service engine soon light comes on

Have you checked the gas cap to see if it is on tight? If you purchased gas in the last couple days it might be the solution. Tighten the cap and drive a couple days to see if the light goes off. If the cap is loose, you might need a new cap.

The Engine light is on. The gas cap is tight. I

I would take the Odyssey to Autozone (or some other of the same sort) and have them hook their reader up to you OBD-II port and get the exact codes that your malfunction light is indicating. They don't charge for that, and it will help you know exactly what the problem is.
Hope this helps you.
