Question about 1990 Chrysler LeBaron

2 Answers

Leaking coolant Coolant is streaming out from directly below the exhaust manifold. I've been told it's the freeze plug but I don't know anything about freeze plugs. It looks like a quarter size hole except it stops about a quarter inch in. But there is a steady stream of coolant pouring out of it.

Freeze plugs are supposed to pop out if the coolant starts to freeze in order to keep the block from cracking. the holes the plungs sit in are als used to cast the engine. see a mechanic and tell him you need a freeze plug replaced and show him which one it is, it won't cost more than $35. Where are the freeze plugs located on a 2000 chevy z71 4x4 1500 pickup

White Smoke is coolant being burnt, usually from
a failed head gasket

The motor overheated & pushed out the freeze plugs

They told you different things for several reasons

They don't have your commitment to leave it & part with your money
They have little experience themselves
They or the shop does not want the job (my guess)
They can not make money on a job that will last a week or more
They won't tell you that you have a job coming costing you $3,000

The motor may have to come out for the freeze plug issue
The head gaskets may have to be done

That is all the guessing from here, sorry

Head gasket or lower intake gasket on 98 Blazer

this does sound like a head problem (hopefully just the gasket). pulling the head with the exhaust manifold attached is possible but tricky and difficult. risking the bolt and drilling it out if it snaps would be alot easier. I would strongly suggest having the head checked while its off (so you dont rebuild to find that you wasted time and money on a bad head)

Freeze plup location

Back of engine, eh? The freeze plugs (3, maybe 4 on that back side) will be on the engine block, below the cylinder head, and below where the exhaust manifold mounts up. Look in back of the exhaust manifold for the plugs. Check for indication of leaking, it should be evident. If you have an engine block heater installed in one of the freeze plug holes, that may have loosened and started leaking. If you find a plug that needs replaced, put a stout screwdriver or punch on the freezeplug, not at the center of plug but to the edge, and whack it good. That edge will go in and the other side will stick out- grab with pliers and remove. Clean the area well to remove rust and scale where freezeplug seals in the block. It will be hard, possibly, to put in a new freeze plug with everything in the way. So buy a rubber expansion plug at the parts store-easy to install, just put a wrench on it to tighten. Take your old freezeplug with you to get the right sized expansion plug.
Good luck, hope you find it.

One of two places the Coolant will escape from! Check all of ur hoses . For soft or swollen ! These engines are notorious for head problems!

Leaking coolant somewhere below after car is warm and shut off can not find, recently replaced water pump, and it is not the radiator

Does this vehicle have a 3.1 or 3.4L motor. If so they commonly have intake manifold gaskets failures. This leads to coolant leaking, usually at the corners of the intake manifold and in some instances leaking into the oil. Look for signs of coolant leaking at the corners of the intake manifold and check the engine oil for coolant.

1999 monte carlo leaking coolant have replaced thermostat and housing and we are still leaking, any ideas?? someone has said we need to replace the freeze plug, and we have heard that we need to replace...

Before you do anything either have the coolant system pressured checked for leaks by a repair shop or purchase one (about $35) and do it yourself. Very simple directions to using this tool. This way you know exactly where the leak is coming from and we can help you from there.
