Question about 2002 Mazda Miata

2 Answers

I own a 2002 Mazda MX5. I love the car but have a little problem. Sometimes while driving, the car starts to spudder and when I push the on the gas, it revs up and down. A couple of times it came to a halt. After turning off the engine and waiting 20 minutes, it started up and ran fine. This problem happens every couple of weeks. I took it to the dealer, they did all their diagnostic tests, and said there were no problems. The problem didn't happen when they took it for a few test drives. I am getting frustrated with this and just want to enjoy driving this wonderful machine. Has anyone else had this problem? Any ideas on how to find the root of this problem? Any suggestions would be very helpful. Distressed Dave!

My friend has a 2002 MX5 convertable that has virtually the same problem. After about 20 minutes of driving it starts to shutter and/or idle roughly until it eventually stalls. Takes several minutes before it will start again (turns over but won't start). Mechanic did a tune up (spark plugs, fuel filter, injector cleaning fluid) etc. Did not fix the problem at which time mechanic ran all the engine diagnostics which showed that everything was OK. At that point mechanic suggested it was probably electrical and that he should take it to an auto electrician. He too just wants the thing fixed but feels that his mechanic is just throwing parts and labour at it. My guess would be to change the fuel pump. Any other suggestions anyone?

Hi

Change the fuel filter, and put a can of injection system cleaner, in the fuel tank.

If the problem persists.

Have the fuel pump pressure tested, at the fuel rail.

Good Luck !

John.

A FixYa would be appreciated Thanks.....John.

All MX-5's are MIATA'S. the coil pack may be bad. 3000 rpms at 20mph, sounds like the trans is slipping if it was an automatic trans. it helps when you tell EVERYTHING about the car, like what trans is has, ect.

It should only need little plastic pins and screws. You could get these at Auto Zone or another auto part store near you.

MX5 Front Wheel Bearing

Easy fix. Remove the wheel, remove caliper and caliper bracket. Remove brake disc. Pry off hub dust cap. This can be difficult and sometimes the cap cannot be reused. They are inexpensive, however. The hubs are not rebuildable and must be replaced. Undo the large hub nut, remove old unit, replace, reinstall nut, crimp the detent at slot in spindle. (use a punch) Nut torque is #125 ft. pounds to 160. Reinstall cap, caliper bracket, etc.
