My 1997 Chevy Lumina will not turn on. I thought it was the starter since it started having difficulties turning on. The security light on the dash is permanently on. So i replaced the starter and tested...

REPLACE BATTERY CABLES THE POSITIVE BATTERY CABLE COULD BE SHORTING TO GROUND.REPLACE STARTER SOLENOID IF NOT BEEN REPLACED.BESURE TO PLACE BACK FLEXIBLE CONDUIT THAT GOES AROUND POSITIVE BATTERY KEEP FROM SHORTING TO GROUND. LAST TIME I SEEN BATTERY CABLES OVER HEAT WAS EITHER STARTER AND SOLENOID SHORTING OUT OR VERY LOOSE BATTERY CABLES CONNECTIONS. REPLACE BATTERY CABLES IF THEY ARE MELTED HAVE STARTER CHECKED OUT YOU COULD HAVE FAULTY STARTER STILL.

How long does the original battery last? What is required to replace it since it is in a wheel well.

Most batteries wear out every 3 to 5 years and need to be replaced. Always replace your battery with an equal replacement battery to assure proper operation.

To check a battery surface voltage, remove the positive terminal protective cover. Connect the positive side meter lead (red) to the positive side battery terminal. Connect the negative (black) side meter lead to the negative battery terminal. With the vehicle not running and the car sitting over night the battery voltage should be between 12.5 and 12.8 volts.(You will need to use a voltmeter for this testing procedure). If the voltage is not up to specs, replace the battery asap.

Concerning the battery replacement procedure:

This is quite easy. The battery is located near the driver's front right wheel, just behind the wheel liner panel. You will need to turn the wheel all the way in to access the panel to remove the battery. I would raise the car, if possible, to make it a little easier. Raise the car and support the entire frame on support stands, if you can do that.

Any special instructions for replacing the battery in my 2007 Azera Ltd? I don't want to fry a circuit

easy way to replace the battery, is to undo the battery harness that holds in into the vehicle, then using a 10 mm spanner, undoe the terminal bolts, if you have a coded stereo, then i would advise to either look and make sure you have the code, or, using either jump leads from another vehicle, connect them to the neck of the battery wires, thus supplying a continuous supply so that the codes are not lost. then remove the leads from the battery on your vehicle and remove the old battery. replace with a new battery, tighten up the terminals and replace the battery harness. remove the jump leads and there you have replaced the battery

Battery replacement

Easy replacement. The battery is located underneath the fuse block in the engine compartment. Stores like AutoZone will replace your battery free of charge if you purchase the battery from them. Personally, I like the Sears Die-Hard, but they charge a nominal fee. Probably not the original battery after all these years, so check for a warranty replacement by looking for the earlier receipt.
