Question about 1994 Ford Thunderbird

Pulling the trouble codes using a volt meter.

4.8 liter
my data link connector (DLC) is under the glove box. but there is no STI plug. And every thing i have read says the DLC should be a 6 prong plug.
Mine is 16, at least 16 holes, there's only 6 wires in it, 2,4,5,10,13,and 16.
should i have a STI plug somewhere? and since my DTC looks differemt than all the pictures say it should, which terminal do I stick the negative side of my meter into?

    not my dlc,
    I have 3 on top and 3 on bottom, and no sti connecter.
    its a SAE J 1850 PWM

Self-Test with Analog Voltmeter DTCs will be represented by pulsing or sweeping movements of the voltmeter's needle across the dial face of the voltmeter (Figure 9). A single-digit number of three will be reported by three needle pulses (sweeps). However, a DTC is represented by a two-digit or three-digit number, such as 2-3. As a result, the DTC of 2-3 will appear on the voltmeter as two needle pulses (sweeps). After a two-second pause, the needle will pulse (sweep) three times.
The Continuous Memory DTCs are separated from the Key On Engine Off DTCs by a six-second delay, a single half-second sweep, and another six-second delay.

Using an Analog Volt/Ohm Meter (VOM)

  1. Turn the ignition key off.
  1. Set the VOM on a DC voltage range to read from 0 to 15 volts.
  1. Connect the VOM from the battery positive post to the Self-Test Output pin of the large Data Link Connector (DLC) (Figure 3).

Self-Test with Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) During Self-Test, a DTC is reported by the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL). It will flash the "CHECK ENGINE" or "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" light on the dash panel (Figure 10). A single-digit number of three will be reported by three flashes.
However, a DTC is represented by a two-digit or three-digit number, such as 2-3 or three digit. As a result, the Self-Test DTC of 2-3 will appear on the MIL as two flashes, then, after a two-second pause, the MIL will flash three times.

OBDI , not transmitting , idle is rough , feels like electrical short , I checked all fuses


If you are unab,le to enter OBD1 comm with a scantool Id suggest trying it with in analog mode next. The scantool is like a PC, takes alot of circuits and software and output stability for it to count its 1s and 0s in correct positions and make data or code information out of them for a scantool.
However you can get it to count codes with a meter or testlight just fine. There are videos available on the procedure all over the web. Basically, you want to ground the grey STI single wire lead (recommend use a testlight, in case of shorts the load of the bulb will act as current limiting protection for the circuit). The Grey STI lead is next to the vehicles DLC data link Connector underhood. The connector is usually near a hood hinge, near the battery, or in one of the front 2 corners, and will usually be black with a cover over it marked EEC IV TEST and will have a large 6 pin connector and a small 1 pin connector snapped into the cover. Heres a picture.

SO, find that, connect a ground to the STI input wire, then turn on the key and watch the check engine lamp. If it starts flashing, you will get your codes by counting flashes. If it DOES NOT, now you will have to start diagnosing control circuit inputs. All powers, grounds, memory leads. It can take awhile and use of a breakout box and ECM wiring pinout and diagram is strongly recommended for time saving..

I am looking for port to use OBD II tool I can not seem to find it. Any idea where I can find it?


On GM and Fords it's on the lower left hand corner of the dashboard, underneath the dash. You may have to look closer to find it.
There may be a plastic cap on it concealing it from view.

It should be there:

When check engine indicator light came on in 1997 dodge grand caravan on and p1698 troubleshooting code appears, what does that mean?


The P1698 code means that no digital data is being received by the powertrain controller (on the left inner fender) from the transmission control module, located on the right inner fender. The manual says to check the ccd bus wires between the module and the rest of the system using the Chrysler diagnostic readout box. But if you don't have one then I think you can do the same thing by measuring for continuity (near 0 resistance) between pin 4 of its plug and pin 11 of the data link plug under the dash .
Then check the resistance between pin 43 if its plug and pin 3 of the data link connector. Finally check continuity from pin 7 of the data connector and pin 65 of the powertrain connector (pink wire). If the continuity between the transmission and data link connector wires checks as well as from the connector to the PCM proves to be ok, then according to the manual the trans controller should be replaced. But you should also verify that there is either a + or - bias voltage of 2.5 volts on each of those wires as a loss of bias voltage will also cause this code.

go under the glove box to the heater box there you will find the plug for the fan there are 4 star screws holding up the fan but before removing it check is there 12 volts and is there an earth in the plug.

How to Replace a Throttle Position Sensor

Procedure:
1. Locate the OBD data link connector (DLC). Refer to your owner’s manual for the specific location.

6. Test the resistance of the throttle position sensor (TPS) with a digital multi-meter. If the resistance is out of specifications, the TPS must be replaced.

Where do i find the dlc plug


PLEASE DON'T FORGET TO RATE!!!! Data Link Connector OBD II Systems use a standardized test connector called the Data Link Connector (DLC). It is located beneath the instrument panel somewhere between the left end of the instrument panel and 12 inches (300 mm) past the vehicle centerline.
The DLC is located out of the sight of vehicle passengers, but should be easily viewable by a technician from a kneeling position outside the vehicle. The DLC is rectangular in design, capable of accommodating up to 16 terminals and has keying features to allow for easy connection. The DCL and Scan Tool connector have latching features that ensure the Scan Tool connector will remain mated when properly connected. Some common uses of the Scan Tool are:
  • To identify and clear any stored diagnostic trouble codes
  • To read the serial data stream information (e.g., PID data)
  • To perform Enhanced Diagnostic Tests (bi-directional Scan Tool)

1990 Ford F250-Code reader won't fit test plugs. Can't find a code reader that fits. Any info on which terminal is which, so I can use a multimeter?
