Question about 1997 Volkswagen Golf

Open Question

Reverse Light / Fuse constantly blowing !!!

I have a couple of probelms with my 2.0 golf gti mark 3.

Firstly, my reverse light does not come on when reverse gear is chosen, i have replaced the bulb but still nothing - is there a fuse for the reverse light and if so where is this located ??

Secondly, the 15 amp fuse for my central locking, cigarette lighter, interior light and trip computer keeps blowing after only ac ouple of days - i've heard this could be down to the fact my rear windscreen wiper has ceased, could this be the case and if so how do i go about unsticking the rear wiper ??

Any assistance in this matter would be grately appreciated as i'm looking to sell the car soon !!

SOURCE: golf gti mark 3 1996.

On the this Golf the panel is located by the driver’s right knee, under the dash panel.
NOTE: fuse specifications are listed on inside of panel cover.

SOURCE: 15 amp fuse blows as soon as it's fitted!

Pinched, worn, or otherwise damaged wire somewhere. You will need to investigate further to find the problem.
Get a continuity tester and check for continuity to ground with each wire.
I would suspect a door wire before the dome light wire.
Good Luck

1998 VW Golf with a manual transmission. It is popping out of reverse and also, while shifting through the gears it is really hesitant to get going in each gear. Seems to be most noticable in first gear...

I had the same problem when I bought my GTI a few years back. It turned out that the reverse gear was shot which resulted in a new transmission. It kinda sounds like you may be in the same boat.

VW Golf 3 jumping out of gears

Sounds like a stripped reverse gear. And for the second gear probally need a new gear (1st 2nd) and the syncros with a new hub. If too much metal from the gears has already made it's way around in the bearings through the transmission oil you might be looking at a new transmission. The Golf 3 generation had many problems with reverse gears. Sorry to be the one to tell you.
