SOURCE: 1998 Wranger Ignition Key Stuck / Steering Column Locked

I have had this same problem on 4 of my Jeeps. A locksmith provided me with two answers.
This key thing happens to me at least once a week.
It is a common problem with Jeeps. 1998 Wrangler, 2007 Cherokee and two 2000 Cherokees all had the issue.

1. Replace the tumbler assembly. $150. USD (Not!)
2. Place the key in the ignition, smartly impact the key on the **** end, end that is sticking out of the ignition. (Harder is not better) strike straight on as to not break the key off. 4 or 5 strikes should fix the problem every time.

FYI - flooding the switch with WD-40 will not fix the issue, it is a tumbler problem.

SOURCE: 1989 Jeep Cherokee - Electrical Problem - horn, brake lights, blinkers, radio/cd...

I think I have found the problem. When I wiggle the ignition switch the turn signals and radio go on and off so I feel the issue is in the ignition switch. From what I understand the actual electronics for the switch are at the base of the sterring column behind the lower dash panel and is connected by a rod that may need adjusting.

SOURCE: Fuse diagram for the 2001 jeep cherokee sport 4.0L needed

Believe the AC compressor Relay is located on the left side of the Fuse block inside the passenger kick panel. Exact location is in your owners manual.

Fuel pump relay is inside of the Engine Fuse block under the hood on the passenger side. Locations are written inside of the lid.

SOURCE: neither turn signal or hazard work, 15 amp fuse

The flasher is located in the Junction Block (under the dash, left of steering wheel. See diagram at very top of this page)...:

zjlimited_407.jpg__zjlimited_408.jpg

Check the position F4, 15 Amp (Lt. Blue) for Flasher, hazard switch (see Junction Block diagram above for location of turn signal Flasher relay - Mopar p/n 4686094).

Look at the end of the flasher relay with the prongs sticking out. There will be 2 plastic tabs holding it together. Break or bend these back. Pull out the insides. On one side will be all the components. On the other side will be solder joints. Get a magnifying glass and inspect these joints. One or two will probably have stress cracks. Just dab a little flux on this joint and heat it with a soldering iron until it melts back together. You may need to add just a little solder. Be sure to get the pins hot and not just the solder. They need a lot of heat. Slide the relay back into its cover, dab a little super glue or tape it back together, and you're ready to go.

Hope helps (remember to rate and commene this help).

AFTER SWITCHING RELAYS, HORN CONTINUES TO GO OFF. HOW TO FIX THIS AND FINISH FUSE RELAY WITH CAR?

The relay is powered at all times . In order to sound the horn the ground side of the relay needs to be grounded. It is grounded to the steering column through the horn button . In other words the horn button wire has been grounded to the steering column. Remove the steering wheel (requires a puller) and remove the locking plate, under the lock plate is a disc or cam, something in there is damaged maybe a wire with a spring, or the cam. Good luck.

Central locking system

Sounds like this car was under water...????

Not knowing the year is a down point.!

I would remove and check all fuse block relays and switches. Both under the hood in engine area and under the dash.
If it was me, I would bring it to a auto electrical shop and have them check to system.

I need to know where the fuses are located on a 2002 Mercury Sable.

Hello Amanda.

There are two separate fuse panels.

One is under the hood under a flip up black cover near the battery. This one is called the battery junction box.

The fuse panel inside the car is located below and to the left of the steering wheel by the brake pedal. You will need to remove the panel cover below the steering column to access the fuses. This one is called the central junction box.

If you need further help in locating the panels, ask me here in a comment.
Thank you for using FixYa.

Battery failed and lights flashing?
Parking lights will flash when the vehicle's battery is disconnected and reconnected.
To stop lights from flashing, either:
Press remote transmitter "UNLOCK" button once OR turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position and press programming button for one second (see below).
The vehicle interior (courtesy) light and door open warning light (DOOR AJAR indicator) will then illuminate for 60 seconds when the ignition is turned off, or until the doors are locked with the remote transmitter. Yes, the dashboard instrument panel lights will flash when the parking lights flash.

Programming or Overriding the Alarm when you have lost the remote
Open driver's door.
Turn ignition key to 'On'
Press and *hold programming button* in (see diagram, button under dashboard)
After 15 seconds the the door locks will cycle 3 times. Do not release Programming button.
Press lock (left) button the remotes to be programmed. The door locks will cycle one time. Exit programming mode by releasing Programming button under dashboard and turning key to off.

codealarmremote1.jpgCode Alarm Programming Button is under dashboard on the kick panel by the driver's left knee, left of the steering column. If you can't find it, it might still be tucked up in the wiring harness higher up in that same general area. The botton is recessed in a plastic ring (see diagram).
This button must be pressed while programming remotes or if the battery was disconnected and the lights are flashing.

I have a 63 Ford T-Bird that I can't get the horn to work. I have checked the wires and the grounds and they look good. The horns work when I tested them also but when I put the steering column together...

You missed something putting the column back together. IDK the design of the wheel, but if all the wires to the column are good, I'd look at the switch itself in the column. Probably not making contact.

Blinker do not work it lights up but do not blink

The Flasher Relay is defective. Replace it. Know that your car has 2 Relays. One for the Turn Signals and one for the Hazard Lights. The Turn Signal flasher relay is located on the driver's side, under dash, behind instrument panel, mounted on passenger side of steering column. The Hazard Relay is located on the driver's side, under dash, driver's side of steering column, mounted in lower corner of fuse block. Make sure you replace the correct relay.

If the lights come on but just do not flash, replace the flasher relay. Your Thunderbird has 2 flasher relays. One for the Turn signals and one for the Hazard lights. The turn signal relay is located Front seating area, driver side, under dash, driver side of steering column, mounted in lower corner of fuse block . The hazard relay is located Front seating area, driver side, under dash, driver side of steering column, mounted in rear of fuse block. Replace the one for the Turn Signals. I'm leaning towards a bad multifunction switch on your steering column.

symptom chart
  • The turn signal lamps are never on
  • Central junction box (CJB) fuse 27 (15A).
  • Circuitry.
  • Electronic flasher.
  • Multifunction switch.

  • The hazard lamps are inoperative
  • Central junction box (CJB) fuse 18 (20A).
