Complain to Toyota, they are fixing some of these car for free. Here is the explanation and the list of problem vehicles.

Oil sludge or black sludge is a solid or gel in motor oil caused by the oil gelling or solidifying, usually at temperatures lower than 100 degrees Celsius. Sludge can be a major contributor to Internal combustion engine problems, and can require the engine to be replaced, if the damage is severe. Sludge is usually caused by the presence of water in the oil, and can accumulate with use. Ways to minimize sludge production and accumulation includes performing frequent oil changes, using synthetic oil, and following the manufacturer's engine maintenance routine.
The following engines were reported by the Center for Auto Safety and/or their manufacturers to have a problem with sludge accumulation:

  • 1996-2001 Toyota 3.0 L 1MZ V6
  • 1996-2001 Toyota 5SFE I4

When the fan stopped working did car temp gauge ever max out if so check coolant level to see if still full check oil if there is any white sludge. If coolant and oil are good than you might have a bad coolant sensor which also operates fan and engine a bad sensor can cause car not to start and ever run very poorly

    2002 toyota camry engine knocking

A light knock at the top of the engine, or ticking, is the valve gear. This is not a worry if it eases when the engine is hot.
A heavier knock down lower indicates trouble with the engine bearings, and this will usually get louder as the engine becomes hot.
These problems have arisen in Camrys due to engine oil sludging. This starves the bearings of oil and they wear quickly. Toyota says it affects engines up to a 2001 build, but I have heard of 2002 engines being affected as well. Toyota insists it is due to owner neglect, but they have taken it on in limited circumstances:

A light rattling sound when the engine is under load indicates you should try a fuel with higher octane rating, although this would be unusual in your model unless you are using a fuel with high ethanol.

    Oil sludge in 2010 maxima

flushing your engine could only cause more problems as in sludge breaking loose and stopping up oil pick up screen which would cause low oil pressure which could be fatal to any motor only true fix to removing engine sludge would be to completely disassemble engine and clean with high pressure or have cleaned by machine shop in a vat with solvant

THERE IS BROWN SLUDGE IN RADIATOR AND SUV OVERHEATING WHAT CAN BE DONE?

It depends on what is causing the brown sludge. More information is needed to make an asessment and prescribe a solution. Brown sludge can be caused by engine oil or transmission fluid mixing with the engine coolant, or it can be caused by severe corrosion in the cooling system due to lack of proper cooling system maintenance.
The engine oil cause will most likely require head gasket replacement.
The transmission fluid cause will require radiator replacement.
The severe corrosion cause will most likely require a complete cooling system overhaul to properly correct it.

I just overhauled my engine and took the car for a test drive, when I heard a noise and my engine ceased. I opened up again and find that the cam is dry?

It is possible the head gasket was replaced upside down or the most common problem is oil sludging, restricting the oil pick up screen.

If the main bearings were replaced then the incorrect 4th main set were installed incorrectly.

Either way, you have an expensive repair ahead of you.

Are there any upgrades to 4.7 dodge engines that fixes the oil sludge problems? Is there an upgrade to the oil pickup tube. existing one seems small to me. I am overhauling the engine and would like to...

Nothing other then regular oil change intervals. Consider a synthetic oil if sludge is a problem. Normally sludge is from excessive heat or poor manitenance... If really working your motor try an external oil cooler/trans cooler. This will help with the fluids

2000 Chrysler Sebring V6 oil pressure light comes on when oil is warm. Replaced the seals and value cover and still the light comes on while Idel now drops below 5 rmp

Here is how I fixed the low oil pressure light problem without using any parts, only the labor to remove the oil pressure sensor is needed. I have an 02 seabring convertible 2.7L engine and I was having the same problem with my oil light coming on at an idle. I bought a new sensor replaced the old one and had the same problem. I than got a test kit and tested my oil pressure. It was very good, never lower than 11 PSI hot at an idle. I was reading about the wire connector modification, but I had an 02 and this mod came out in 98, surely Chrysler incorporated this mod on its newer vehicles. Well after checking more they did not and this is what turned me off on Chrysler products forever. For a manufacturer to produce a vehicle with a known defect and a modification fix and not incorporated this modification on its newer vehicles is inexcusable. After reading that the modification was to stop pressure build up in the sensor housing I decided to make a pressure release hole in the sensor housing. I took my old oil pressure sensor and using a 1/8 inch bit I drilled a small hole at the base of the plastic sensor tower. I put the old sensor in and drove for a week, no problem with my light coming on. To test further I took the new oil pressure sensor I bought and drilled a hole in it. Put it in and I've been driving for months and no problem with my oil pressure light coming on now.

1997 Toyota Camry with second round of engine sludge

The best way to solve the sludge problem is to drive the car! If you drive a few miles then shut it off that advances sludge issues. Make sure you get it fully warmed up. Toyota sent me the notice on the sludge issue in 1998. I have 327,000 miles on my Camry now. When I drive it I get it fully warmed up, and most days I put on at least 20 miles. I change oil every 4-5000 miles. These are great cars.
I never changed any of the common parts that fail on most American cars before 100,00 miles. Such as O2 sensors, alternator, starter, cv joints, all original still.
