Question about 1994 Geo Prizm

94 geo prizm cv joints gone bad.Was driving car made some type of winding sound.Now car wheels wont roll or spin even with car up in the air?

    UNLESS THE CAR IS STANDARD THE WHEELS ARE NOT SUPPOSED ROTATE, OR THE CAR IS IN NEUTRAL.

You didn't say if it was automatic or manual, but I think your problem is really your transmission. Put the wheels back on the ground, grab the shafts and try turning them. If they don't turn or move around excessively, you can safely eliminate the CV joints.

Ok i replaced the cv joints on my 98 geo prizm now when you put it in gear it just makes a screaming noise. What could this be. It will change gears but wont go.

My source only goes up to 1997...

But I have every confidence a CV joint can only scream if the ball bearings are completely GONE.

Was this a NEW... or used application?

Go get the new CV box and look into the bottom...
Are there ball bearings rolling around...???

Did you pack grease into the new CV joints or put them on
as they came out of the box... wrapper...

AT this point... I'd suggest you get the old CV and roll it in your hands... push it back & forth... you can get the bearings in/out by rolling the center inside the ring and see how it works.

A slot for every bearing & a bearing for every slot...

Go up on-line.

You will see the axles (half shafts (?) are sold as complete units...

In my opinion VERY CHEAPLY... Do it again...check for grease & bearings.

Why is my 1996 Geo prizm making a loud clunking noise when I put it in drive


we are deaf here.
why not ask a live person, to find the location first.
CV joints or what ever the source is.
even loose mounts and brackets on any engine can clunk.
as can exh. parts.
takes live mech, to do this ,no net bunnies. blind and deaf.

How do I remove drive axle on a 1992 geo prizm

you can read the Geo book or the corolla book, same car.

the books and online have lots of photos,sorry, im not doing all that....

  1. Remove the wheel cover.
  2. Remove the cotter pin, hub nut cap, hub nut and washer.
  3. Loosen the wheel nuts.
  4. Elevate and safely support the car.
  5. Remove the front wheel.
  6. Remove the lower control arm to ball joint attaching nuts and bolts.
  7. Use a ball joint separator such as GM J-24319-01 or equivalent to remove the tie rod ball joint from the knuckle.
  8. Remove the bolts holding the brake caliper bracket to the steering knuckle. Use stiff wire to suspend the caliper out of the way; do not let the caliper hang by its hose. Remove the brake disc.
  9. Using a puller such as GM J-25287 or equivalent, push the axle from the hub.
The Prizm axle can be separated from the hub using a brass or plastic hammer. Nova requires the use of the puller.
  1. Use a slide hammer and appropriate end fitting (GM J-2619-01 and J 35762 or equivalents) to pull the driveshaft from the transaxle. Remove the shaft from the car.
To install:
  1. Install shaft into transaxle. If necessary, use a long brass drift and a hammer to drive the housing ribs onto the inner joint.
  2. Install the shaft into the wheel hub.
  3. Install the lower control arm to the lower ball joint. Tighten the nuts and bolts to 59 ft. lbs.
  4. Install the tie rod end to the steering knuckle and tighten the nut to 36 ft. lbs.
  5. Install the brake disc; install the brake caliper and tighten the bolts to 65 ft. lbs.
  6. Install the wheel.
  7. Install the hub nut and washer.
  8. Lower the vehicle to the ground.
  9. Tighten the wheel lugs to 76 ft. lbs. Tighten the hub nut to 137 ft. lbs.
  10. Install the nut, cap, cotter pin and washer. Install the wheel cover.

1990 Geo Prizm sounds like a knocking sound under power coming from around the front hub. when i release the accelerator the noise disappears. what is this mysterious issue.


This noise is caused by a worn or damaged front drive axle Constant Velocity Joint (CV for short), there is one of them at each front wheel just behind the brake disk on the end of the drive axle, they have a rubber cone shaped grease boot over the joint, check to see if the grease boot is torn, the joint then runs dry of grease and makes noise, at that point it must be replaced. Have a shop put in the air and inspect them both.

When i accelerate the driver front side wheel vibrates and even on sudden brakes


I would have the front end looked at. It may be the tire, rotor or wheel bearing. It might also be the CV joint. They are all very important safety issues since you might lose control of the car.

When I was driving my 1996 Geo Prizm at around 25mph, I heard a popping sound and then the grinding started like it was rubbing metal to metal. When I turn to the right, it sounds louder. I had the brakes...


CV Joint went out. since it gets worse when you turn right it is most likely an inside drivers side CV joint or the out side passenger side. The popping sounds was probably the dust boot popping from pressure build up which should make it simple to locate since you just need to identify the boot with a tear in it.

What sound do you here when the starter has gone out on the geo prizm?


Nothing, battery bad
Click, could be weak battery or starter bad.
Spinning noise, selanoid bad.
Grinding noise, starter or fly wheel bad.
Auto part store will test it for you, in the car if you can get it there.

94 Geo Prizm CV or driveaxle?


on this type of vehichle, you have two axles in the front; one going to each side. Chances are that the boot at the axle joint was torn and that is why you are having problem. In teh past people used to replace the boot, this day and age its actually cheaper to replace the axle. So you would need to replace that side of the axle (the half shaft).
