92 camry 4 cylinder was running great, it got hot then shut down

The engine turns over good, the timing belt is good, it just won't start. is there some kind of safety relay that needs to be reset because it got hot? oh yeah, it was made in canada. does that make a difference? we took it to a garage and they said it melted the rings. is that possible??

they said it had no compression, but i took the plugs out and had my son crank it over and i held my hand over where the plug holes are and it had somewhat good compression. i will check the fuel tomorrow and get back with you.

"melted the rings"? What? Take it to another garage and get a "professional" to look at it. Piston rings don't melt. They wear out over a long period of time. Unless you ran this thing for a very extended amount of time without oil or something drastic like that, your rings did not "melt". If they did somehow melt, the engine would be siezed, which would mean that it would NOT turn over at all. You said it got hot but hey, engines overheat all the time. Did they do a cylinder compression test, or check for spark, or check the fuel pressure? What did they check? If so, what was the result of their findings? There is no safety relay. That would be nice though. I'm telling you, I smell a rat. Take it somewhere else but in the mean time, please give us a little more info. Thanks.

you need to check if you have spark from the plugs and fuel from the injectors. Also when you try and start it have someone cover the exhaust with their hand and see if you are getting suffiecient compression (if so your rings are still good).

Chromium/Molybdenum/Nickel alloy steel starts to melt around 2800 degrees fahrenheit, while the plastics under the hood will start to melt or burn around 500 degrees If the garage made that highly improbable diagnosis without even dropping the oil pan, DON'T GO BACK TO THAT SHOP. If there was no mechanical damage to the engine when it overheated, as in cracked block, cracked head, or bad head gasket, you are looking at either a problem with the ignition or the fuel distribution system. Take it to a REPUTALE shop that won't try to BS you.

If car went hot it could damage head gaskete and engine block causing it to crack. That result the compression. Loose the compression to be lost. Lost of compression will result engine to no start.

I have a 97 geo metro 4 cyl engine the other day broke down the wrecker driver said sounds like fuel pump is bad. I replaced pump and filter still would not start. getting fire. Last night I started it...

first check fuses. (test them)
then check for spark at all 4 cylinders. good.?
if not timed correctly (spark) with timing light, then the cam belt slipped. (oops not changed at 60k, oops)
if all that is good engine runs on test fuel, does it?
if yes, you lost fuel.
easy huh, watch scotty

1993 Subaru loyale no compression, have spark at the coil just won't start

The engine can't run without compression in the cylinders. The plug will still spark, but without a compressed air/fuel mixture to burn and power the cylinder down, the starter will just keep spinning the engine over, cranking forever and not starting.
Check if your timing belts are good and not broke. Cylinder compression is dependent on good piston rings, intake and exhaust valves that open and close at right times and that seal good when closed, and a head gasket that seals up the cylinder from leaks where compression could blow into the water passages, or oil passages, or to outside of engine.
If the timing belts are good, a leak-down test of each cylinder will pinpoint where compression is lost.
Good luck with the Sube, great cars, great engines, but the head gaskets are a common problem.

Could be the fuel pump, but if the Timeing belt/chane has never been replaced then it most likley jumped time or the belt broke

92' toyota Camry - 4-cylinder....When engine is turned off after it had been running for awhile , it will turn but not start ...but after it had time to cool down for 10 - 30 will start, and...

Difficult hot starting is more often caused by

- clogged air filter element
- low fuel pressure in the injector supply rail
- bad ground connection, at battery, engine block, or chassis

Check these things first. You may need to measure fuel pressure with a T-fitting and gauge. Please don't try it by running the engine and seeing how fast the fuel fills a container, that is dangerous and gives the wrong answer.

Timing chain or belt?

The 2002-2006 Camry received the next generation 2.4L 4-cylinder engine (model 2AZ-FE), which combines decent power with excellent fuel economy. This engine does not have a timing belt, it has a chain that does not need to be replaced.
The second choice is very smooth and powerful 3.0-liter 24-valve all-aluminum V6 engine.
Starting from 2004, the 3.3-liter V6 DOHC VVT-i engine is available on SE V6 model.
Both, the 3.0L and 3.3L V6 engines have a timing belt that must be replaced at certain interval

My 87 toyota camry wont start has spark and fuel but turns over

does it have the 4 cylinder engine? if yes you could have broken timing belt witch opens and closes intake and exhaust valves. same for V6 engines.the belt must be replaced and engine crank and cam shafts retimed with new belt istallation. one to tell is when cranking the engine turns over kinda fast.

The most likely senario is that the water pump went bad which caused the overheating in the first place. Then after the engine shut down, the water pump seized up. When the engine was restarted, the timing belt started to smoke because the water pump, which runs off the timing belt, was not turning. Since the engine overheated to the point of shutting down, blown head gaskets are a possibility. Put a new timing belt and water pump on it and start it up. If it runs OK, you're good to go.
