Question about 2001 Mercury Sable

Transmission slips when going into second

I have a 2001 Mercury Sable that will sometimes slip (or at least what I think is slip) when going into second gear. It only does it after I have been driving steady for I'd say 10 miles or so. Then there are times that it takes a little longer or it may not do it at all! Is my transmission on its way out? I did put some kind of Lucas stop slip or something in it. I felt like I saw an improvement, but right when I thought everything was okay it slipped. Oh, maybe I should tell you what I mean by slip... It seems to almost pause... I have heard the engine reve and be going no where before. I usually let go of the gas as a reflex so I am not sure if it does it every time. Thanks for your help!

Your transmission is more than likely going out. I do know that between 1997 and 2002 the transmission that went into GMC vehicles have had bad reviews. I had a 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix that was doing the same thing and the transmission went out on me. I am not positive to this but i have read the research and it has happened to me before.

How do i replace the transmission on a 01 sable with a DOHC engine. while the transmission is cool it shifts okay after it warms up the transmmission slips and doesn't want to pull itself. Is this a bad...

It's one thing when they don't shift, but when they slip, it is rebuild time. You will have to take it to a shop, they will swap it out for $1999.00, they are crooks, but what are you going to do. Get a few quotes, you can do it yourself, but it is hard work. You can rebuild it your self, but you have better be real good with nuts and bolts and patience and have a big book handy and about $500 in parts, and tools. You could also try a can of miracle transmission fixer, sometimes it works, it might buy you some time. It swells up the seals to stop it from slipping and leaking. It didn't work on my truck, but I had nothing to lose but the $15 for the stuff. Hope this helps.

1996 MERCURY SABLE 65,000 MILES ON SPEEDO. TRANSMISSION STARTED TO SLIP ALSO RUST UNDER VEHICLE. LINCOLN MERCURY STATED REPAIR WOULD COST 4 TO 5 THOUSAND DOLLARS AND YOU MIGHT AS WELL JUNK THE VEHICLE

Transmission problems are an issue with Sables. If you Google transmission and Mercury Sable you will come to quite a few complaints. There are actually a few posts on this website where folks are having issue too. Personally a cheap o-ring in my 1999 Sable went out resulting in a $1800 transmission repair bill. I literally gave the car away about three years ago. In almost 20 years of owning vehicles the two years I had the Sable was the most expensive and busiest in the way of repairs.
