Did it originally have shims as far as you know? They had them on the older vehicles for that reason.Definetly try it out.

I'm not familiar with your vehicle, but I've never encountered a vehicle needing shims on a starter motor.

What may happen is the teeth on the ring gear - the teeth on the outside of the flywheel - become worn. The starter meshes with these teeth and spins the engine to start it. If the teeth are worn the starter cannot mesh with them and consequently, can't turn the engine over.

Because of compression the engine usually stops in the same position - the worn teeth are at the starter.

Try turning the engine by hand/with a wrench through 180 degrees so that any worn teeth are away from the starter, and then try starting it. If the engine spins - the fault is worn teeth on the flywheel.

I have an 88 ford bronco 2 v6 automatic 2wd. I replaced The flywheel twice because it kept breaking. Someone told me I should get a new torque converter that a faulty one could be causing the flywheel...


Two major possible causes here:
1. Your starter is not engaging the teeth on the outside of the plate properly, as shown by chewed-up teeth, both on flywheel [actually called a flexplate on automatic], and on starter. Dirt trapped in between the starter and the housing will keep it from mating properly, and cost you big bucks. Shims are available to get the teeth exactly lined up.
2. OR your torque converter is indeed not true to the engine drive-shaft, causing pressure off-center. That would cause the flexplate to break out at the center. If this is how your plates broke, you probably will need a new automatic transmission.
If you also have engine oil back there, the rear bearing of the engine could be shot, indicating bad things. Have a pro check both shafts for sloppy bearings.

Shims can be where the starter case meets the bell housing. There are not many models using shims anymore, they were used a lot in GM vehicles, not so much in Ford products.
The gear on the starter drive needs to mesh with the flywheel teeth. Sometimes a starter would rock loose in its mount and wear the starter case or the bell housing. When you try to align the 2 parts, it would throw off the mesh of the gears and teeth. The shims are usually patterned after the shape of the facing of the parts. You may need to go to the Dealer for these shims.

1999 m cougar 2.5 v6 auto. the starter grinds it usually takes about 5 or 6 trys to start the car. a shop told me it was the fly wheel but i jacked up the car and there are no teeth missing on the fly...


Teeth may not be missing on the flywheel, but they are supposed to be a certain thickness and the teeth may have worn too thin to mesh correctly.

Some cars also use shims to change the angle in which the starter contacts the flywheel. You may want to check with a local auto parts store to see if a new starter comes with shims.

WAS HAVEING PROBLEM WITH SARTER BECAUSE MY FLYWHEEL WAS MISSING TEETH JUST PUT IN NEW FLYWHEEL AND CLUTCH STILL HAVING PROBLEMS GETTING IT TO START DONT KNOW IF ITS SHIMED WRONG OR IF ITS THE WRONG STARTER...


It may be the starter dive teeth are worn from hitting the flywheel. Replace the starter drive or easier yet just install a rebuilt starter. If there were shims in the old one replace the shims in the proper location or you may need to either leave them out or add more to be sure the starter drive is properly engaging the flywheel.

My 2002 ford explorer clicks when i turn the key on, i turn the key off and it starts no problem. but lately it is clicking more often. i have just installed a new starter and celinoid. any ideas?


double check the starter motor and make sure it is shimmed right if needed or it could be flywheel teeth are grground down from wear which means droping trannny and replacing flywheel good luck

Starter noise during cranking and after the engine fires is often a result of too much or tool little distance between the starter pinion gear and the flywheel. A high pitched whine during cranking (before the engine fires) can be caused by the pinion and flywheel being too far apart. Likewise, a whine after the engine starts (as the key is released) is often a result of the pinion-flywheel relationship being too close. In both cases flywheel damage can occur. Shims are available in 0.015 in. sizes to properly adjust the starter on its mount. In order to check and adjust the shims, you will also need a flywheel turning tool, available at most auto parts stores or from any auto tool store or salesperson. If your car's starter emits the above noises, follow the shimming procedure below:
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle safely using jackstands.
  3. Remove the torque converter cover on the bottom of the bell housing.
  4. Using the flywheel turning tool, turn the flywheel and examine the flywheel teeth. If damage is evident, the flywheel should be replaced.
  5. Insert a screwdriver into the small hole in the bottom of the starter, then move the starter pinion and clutch assembly so the pinion and flywheel teeth mesh. If necessary, rotate the flywheel so that a pinion tooth is directly in the center of the two flywheel teeth and on the centerline of the two gears, as shown in the accompanying illustration.
  6. Check the pinion-to-flywheel clearance by using a 0.020 in. wire gauge (a spark plug wire gauge may work here, or you can make your own). Make sure you center the pinion tooth between the flywheel teeth and the gauge — NOT in the corners, as you may get a false reading. If the clearance is under this minimum, shim the starter away from the flywheel by adding shim(s) one at a time to the starter mount. Check clearance after adding each shim.
  7. If the clearance is a good deal over 0.020 in. (in the vicinity of a 0.050 in. plug), shim the starter towards the flywheel. Broken or severely mangled flywheel teeth are also a good indicator that the clearance here is too great. Shimming the starter towards the flywheel is done by adding shims to the outboard starter mounting pad only. Check the clearance after each shim is added. A shim of 0.015 in. at this location will decrease the clearance about 0.010 in. Battery and Starter Specifications Chart

My starter is grinding in my 85 bronco just put it in


There are several transmissions available for this truck, and you often have to add or remove shims for proper starter gear engagement in the flywheel/flexplate.

Did you check the for proper engagement when installing the new starter?

This is fairly common, you will have to shim the starter to adjust for the different clearance and you can usually get shims from any part store.
