2000 Chrysler 300M. No start TIMING BELT????
I was told over the phone that the timing belt likely went. Any idea how much this job costs? I know that the water pump needs to be replaced at the same time. Car has 365K without any other problems. THis is the first thing outside maintenance I have had to do.

This engine is what is known as an interference engine, so if the timing belt lets go like this you most likely have bent engine valves and or piston crown damage. The best advice i can give is have a new belt, water pump and automatic tensioner pulley installed and see if it starts, you may get lucky, my wife did when hers let go a year before I meant er. You can purchase a timing belt "kit" with all the parts here is the part number and price. ACDELCO Part # TCKWP295 TIMING BLET KIT- INCLUDES
WATER PUMP BELT KIT,TMG INTERFERENCE ENGINE APPLICATION PRICE $184.00 USD Source for parts price and number www.rockauto.com
It's not a kinde of job that can do every one like change the tire. Change the timing belt can do only impressionist, ifsomethingisnotproperlyin placecanbreakthe enginethat willcost more. Leavetomake this worka impressionist.
If it is the timing belt you are replacing, wait a second while I explain: The timing on this engine is SUPER critical. If you are off just ONE tooth you could ruin the engine. In back of the heads there are two cam covers- little triangular plates that seal off the cams and keep it from leaking. The covers are removed and a special tool made by Miller is bolted on each to align the timing when putting the belt back on. The crank is set at TDC and matched to the mark on the oil pump housing. Only then is the belt timing accurate when you put the new belt on. Then remove the special alignment tool and replace the covers. Don't try replacing the belt without this procedure.
I am not saying that this is your problem for sure, but have you had your water pump and timing belt replaced lately?? I had the same car and it would crank and crank but would not start. I replaced both my cam and crank sensors also. Eventually I tore into it and found out that my timing belt had broke.
What happened to mine is the water pump (inside the timing cover powered by the timing belt) leaked and the coolant messed up my timing belt and the timing belt finally snapped.
I replaced water pump and timing belt and luckly the car did not have any bent valves. Just to help out I would not try and crank the car anymore until you know for sure that your timing belt is intact. If it is bad and you go in to replace it I would do the water pump while you are in there. It will save you trouble and is a really easy job.
If the timing belt broke, than you heard a big banging noise from your engine and that is it, your valves met with pistons and they are more than likely to be bend, unfortunately this situation calls for engine recondition. But are you sure the belt broke as some of these 300M's were on a chain drive.
As you can see the water pump goes off the timing belt. So pricing is quite expensive, especially from a garage. I have been told people are being told $1,100-$1,600. You are looking $300-$400 in parts (Napa) and 8-10 hrs labor. That is for the pump and timing belt. Not exactly sure on labor but pretty that is close. Hope that helps
this is an interference engine. Make sure you have timing marks lined up correctly. if so then you have bent valves. As far as rebuilding or replacing it all depends on your skill level and if you want a warranty or not. Using a reman engine from jasper would come with a 3yr 75k mile warranty parts and labor. where as rebuilding your self would have none.
HI there. My water pump just went out on my 2004 300M with 85000 miles. My cost was about $400 to replace the water pump and timing belt.
I recommend replacing the water pump at the same time since you have to take the timing belt off to change the water pump.
$350 is a good price. The dealer will charge you double that.
