The AT light on my dashboard goes on and off intermittently. When it is on, the car makes a very rough transition into reverse, and does nothing when i put it in "manual mode". I was told at a Mazda dealership that they do not know what the problem is, but they charged me 100 dollars and suggested i replace the solenoid valve for $1,200. What the ?!??

Weird, sounds like your battery connections are possibly loose, but
the car wouldn't start properly, or at all, if this was the case. You might just have a loose connection to the dashboard controls?
If you are up to the task, I'd remove the guage console,if you can,and make sure all the connections are tight. Good luck.
Being a 95 it dosent have OBD2 so it may not store a trouble code in the computer.
From the symptoms it sounds like either, Air flow sensor, O2 sensor
The O2 will not usually cause stalling under acceleration.
I have had the same problem at almost exaclty the same milage. 2004 Mazda 3 3 door hatchback (5 door sedan). I was told by the service manager that there is a valve in the manifold that fails and starts flapping, sounded just like a collapsed lifter. I think this should be covered under warranty. If not the mfg warranty the emissions? .. good luck.
