Sounds like wheel bearing if it happens when you turn left it would be the right rear bearing and so on

2004 ford freestar - when i back up and the wheels are turned (but not cranked) i hear a clicking noise. no noise when i'm turning in drive - only reverse

check the brakes and the cv axles. My thinking is cv axles if the vehicle has around
100 thousand miles on it. Hope this is helpful.

2005 dodge ram 1500 4x4.There is a grinding noise only in 4 wheel drive only when turning.Rear differencial fluid was just replaced.

This sounds like a bad CV shaft. Check the boots for grease on the outside of them or torn boots the grease may have already washed out and wiped out the joints.

Noise in rear differencial

Remove the rear cover and check for fine metal in the lube. Most internal differential problems are expensive to repair and require both experience and specific knowledge regarding using dial indicators etc. It is generally cheaper to replace the unit from drum to drum with a scrapyard unit where all that is necessary is to match the gear tooth (on ring and pinion gears) count to maintain the proper match to the front diff. This applies to all diff failures except outer axle bearings.

As a matter of fact the diff can make noise on and off the gas, my own car a 1996 Corvette does this, it needs the ring and pinion replaced, is this what you are talking about when you say they told you that you needed a whole new differential?
