'91 Subaru: dash & running lights won't turn on with headlights

On my 1991 Subaru Loyale, for several months, occasionally when i would turn headlights on, only the R headlight wold turn on (although less brightly), with no dash lights and no running/tail lights.  Next time i drove, or sometimes after going over a bump, all would return to normal (dash, running, & Left headlight would work again).  Now, the condition (i.e., no left headlight, dash or running/tail lights, and only dim rightside headlight) seems permanent.  I think it's not a bulb issue, because it used to go on AND off; this makes me think it's either some kind of wiring short, or perhaps something in the headlight switch on the column (although why would that allow the Right headlight to still work?)

Johnvan546 is totally correct. I have fixed this problem before and am about to do it again. There are two relays underneath your dash on drivers side to the left of the steering wheel if your sitting in the seat and looking forward. The appear identical by just looking at them ( I think they are identical). They are located in clips that are tough to remove so it takes little hands or the removal of other components of the dash. the problem lies in one of those relays. Unplug the wires from one to see if your symptoms change. if not, then its the other one. My issue is I call the dealer and tell them i need a headlight relay, and they don't know what I'm talking about. good luck.

I should mention by underneath your dash, start with all the paneling under your steering wheel and get a flashlight. the relays are very close to the steering column

This is a problewm I have been researching. On the 91 Loyale there are two headlight relays. The relay for the left headlight also controls the instrument lights and the running lights. If the right relay is working and the left is not, the left headlight will be dim because of a back electrical path through the high beam indicator light on the dash, but the instrument and running lights will be out. I have been trying to find out where Subaru put these relays, but three Subaru service departments have been no help. One dealer's service department told me to remove the large bezel around the instrument panel. I did and the relays weren't there. Lots of luck.

My 91' subaru loyale is using a lot of motor oil, but the oil is not leaking. what could be the problem?

Milage could be one, have you changed weight or brands of oil? That can cause it to use oil too, or the engine could be just plane wore out.

Hello, I have a 91 subaru loyale with 200000 miles. When I am near the end of a gear and about to shift up, a rattling/knocking occurs. A friend told me it may just be the heat shield on the exhaust...

Not being able to hear the sound my self makes it hard to tell for sure. The shield for the exhaust is a good place to start. Only takes a few secounds to slide under and make sure the screws are tight and the folds are crimped tightly. The crimps loosen up occasionally and a pair of pliers will secure them easily. Good luck and have a great day.

How to retrieve trouble codes on 91 loyale wagon

mil is the malfunstion indicator lamp (check engine light) there is a connector either under the dash or under the hood near firewall that is normally not plugged in to anything. Use a paperclip to jumper this and the engine light will flash codes. i think the connector is green but check a repair manual to be sure. there are other connectors that you don't want to mess with by accident
