Question about 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

3 Answers

My 96 jeep runs cold, especially first thing in the morning and tends to buck and jump but idles fine. charlie I bought the leep on friday and it has been sitting for a least a month. About 20 miles down the road it began to buck and jump. With only a 1/4 of tank of gas in it I decided to add a little more. I drove a little bit further and added some STP in the gas tank thinking it may have some water inside. But the next morning that it ran very cold when I cranked it.

Thanks for that piece of information but it has nothing to do with my problem. The Jeep runs cold in the morning, as in the motor runs hard. And my check engine light is on

Pour a bottle of dry gas into the tank. Use middle or top grade gas. If it sat for a month, there's condensation in the gas tank. The plugs will get fouled. The higher octane gas will help burn the deposits off the plugs. It probably could just use a good tuneup, once the gas gets run through. For winter, run 5W-30 oil. for summer 10W-30. A bottle of DuraLube every 50,000miles will help it run smoother.

Hmm, it definitely seems you have a problem with your heater or maybe your tires. Did you under your jeep and check the tires? And try taking a look at your heater. You might have a crack somewhere also.

Prviouse owner seems to have had a water pump problem and removed the thermostate, causeing the engine not to reach operating tempture in time. Do you have heat? does it take a long time to creat heat on a city drive and no heat on the highway? estimaternotfree@yahoo.com

1995 jeep gr cherokee laredo jumps when first star in morning and runs rough when ac or heat on

my guess, car unseen.
car has an A/T trans, and all A/T jump from park to drive
selection is made on a cold engine, due to the very fast idle speed.
what was the park and cold idle speed. and out door temps.
the lower out door temps, make idle speed , cold engine, even higher
but when the engine reaches 180F or more and holds, the RPM
is about 800 RPM (the FSM tells the exact amount and does vary for the unstated engine option) so at 800 the tranny don;t lurch, did it on a hot engine. so if idle speeds are wrong say so and say it with engine temps. or its all meaningless.
next :
runs rough, the engine (even parked?) is called misfire.
misfire on a good engine (full compression)
is:
1: bad spark (or never had a tune up ever) every 60k miles.
2: bad fueling. too rich, too lean (low idle) bad injectors (stuck or clogged, or wrong fuel pump pressure or bad Fuel pressure regulator)
3: bad fuel.

there is a test for each possible failure. all very simple test.
it takes $80 in gauge tools to find engine problems.

My jeep shakes alot too when idling- runs ok while driving--

The intake air sensor and the coolant temp sensors regulate the cold run like the mechanical chokes of earlier cars. It would be a good idea to have them checked by a competent mechanic before buying or paying for hunt ant peck solutions. Good Luck, Ned

Its you antenna module above your headliner. It controlls your remote for keyless entry as well as your am/fm reception via an amplifier. GM part number is 12233252 for updated and revised version around $100 bucks online.

1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee alarm keeps randomly going off.

this happened to me recently with my 96 grand cherokee. the battery got drained by the alarm going off randomly at night. i pulled the fuse for the horn so at least my neighbors would only be bothered by flashing lights. then i couldn't jump the car because the alarm was still going off. i hooked my car to jump it to another car, and then i had to deactivate the alarm first by putting my key in the driver side door and unlocking the car. then i left it hooked to another car and still getting power but didn't jump it for at least 5 minutes in case the computer needed to reset. then it jumped fine. from what i've read online, this is a common problem that can be avoided if you stop using the power locks and always manually lock and unlock the doors with your key. its a little annoying, but apparently the power locks are connected to the alarm issue. hope the same works for you.

96 jeep cheerokee won't idle when cold.

its an oldervehicle and sometimes with age they have to be babied to run right.i dont think theres much you can do to make it start and stay running right off the way it used to other than what youredoing now which is probably sitting in it with your foot on the gas until it warms up if my guess is correct. i have a 1994 suburban that i haveto do the same thing to because its just gotten where it doesnt like cold weather.

2002 Jeep does not idle

Well alot of people tend to think that just because they have a vehicle that is new or within 10 yrs of new...that they can get in it and strart up and just take off...well...the truth is and especially in Winter months is that you have to warm up your vehicle till the water tempature gets to where it needs to be ...warmed up.....in order for all the systems in your vehicle to work properley.....so Warm up your vehicle everyday before you drive it....don't just hop in and take off......This is my solution to this problem, especially if it is a seasonal..problem.....Sincerely, Mike
