Question about 2000 Renault 181
HELP my scenic developed a problem where from a cold start it will rev to around 4000 rpm then if you press the accelarator it will cut out, then you have to turn the engine over continuously until it starts then it does the same until the engine reaches running temprature then it revs and drives normal ....does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem may be ? help would be much appreciated
thanks in advance
this exact problem on a megane coupe is caused by a small air pipe that connects to a 2 inch wide black box that is located under the bonnet near the windscreen on the passangers side. the zigzag light indicates an electrical fault (in this case lack of compression and will affect your revs) if you find this pipe and it has snapped off. the reason for this may be that your engien is lose and moves. grab the engien with 2 hands and see if you can wobble it with allot of play. if so your engien mountings need replaceing. you may also experiance juddering in low gears

SOURCE: engine revs itself when sat idle
bet it failed on lambda reading...........sounds like you got an air leak somewhere ! or could be an idle control valve problem, have you had it plugged into any diagnostic equipment yet ?

From your description this appears to be a Brake servo issue.
The brakes are assisted by a vacuum created from the draw off the inlet manifold, it gives assistance too the brake pedal pressure by a large tank/cylinder mounted on the Bulkhead/firewall.
I feel that the sound you a hearing is air being draw into the Brake Servo from the foot pedal seal and the reason for fluctuation in the engine is the vacuum from the inlet manifold is being upset.
Attention I suspect should be addressed to the Brake servo/pedal seal or gaitor.
I hope this clarifies your thoughts?
Please remember to rate my effort.

SOURCE: runs rough under load ,stalls
one of 3 faults
1 MAF sensor also Known as air mass sensor
2 EGR valve, this is most common with the 4000 rev limit and a top speed of say 50 mph
3 air leaks or tears in air pipes or poor seals.
I would be tempted to clean both the EGR and MAF sensor before spending any money though, these parts ofetn work much lonegr when clean
