1993 vw passat rear brakes...unable to compress caliper piston? Caliper is off, the new brakes are on but I am unable to get the caliper pistons back far enough to go over the new brake pads.

G clapm and water pump pliers needed,slight compression on G clamp which is on back /piston slight pressure applied then turn the piston with the waterpump pliers ,better with two people one holding it and keeping pressure on G clamp whilst the other turns piston.Yes i know their is a special tool for this and every motor has its own style of tool but mine does all .

Steps to replacing rear brake pads


A special tool is required to compress the caliper piston on the rear brakes-don't use a C-clamp on the piston.
Raise the vehicle and remove the tire. The rear calipers have only one guide pin. Remove this pin and raise the caliper. Remove the old brake pads. Using the special tool compress the caliper piston-the piston will have one or two slots on it. These slots must in the correct position to remount the caliper. Install the new brake pads and slide the caliper back over the rotor and replace the guide pin. If the caliper doesn't slide over the rotor you'll need to reset the slots on the piston. Replace the tires and you're ready to go.

How do you compress the piston in the rear caliper on a 2002 VW passat W8 moel.


Hi On a VW PASSAT.
DON'T Hammered...
Just you need to turn with the Turn style tool. to push down the brake piston.
If is hard. Open a LITTE the BLEADER valve to to DROP a few of the brake fluid. Bucause if you force to much. The Brake master cylinder and ABS Module seals can be damaged.
Do a Little by Little. with the bleader valve open. is the right prosses to do that.
But don't forget That maybe your car Require DOT4. Don't put DOT3. is not the same.
I include a picture of your calliper. and the tool.

Can not get rear break piston to compress to allow for new pads


The rear disk brake piston does not compress back into the caliper, it has notces on the caliper piston that a tool fits into and the caliper piston is actually turned or screwed back into the caliper, and a notch in the piston must also be aligned to fit the the small protrusion from the backing plate of the inner brake pad.

The brake tool can be obtained from most auto part stores, and it is usually square with protrusions sticking out from the sides in different patterns to fit various caliper pistons, and it usually attaches to a 3/8" drive extension and ratchet.

Do not compress this type of caliper piston because the caliper can damaged.

take calipers loose from rotor.then take large c clamp and put one side on the piston the other side on backside of caliper.the tighten c clamp untill caliper is compressed;oh yea before you do ant of this remove cap from master cylinder

you need a special tool which fits into the two slots on the caliper and rotates while applying pressure to return the caliper piston. it is because the caliper piston is threaded for use with a combination parking brake.

Compressing the rear disc brake caliper on 2008 grand caravan


The rear calipers on these models require a special tool that compresses and turns the piston in at the same time -- most parts stores carry this tool.

It is called a caliper piston press -- and it installs where the pads would go and acts like a c-clamp,when turning handle it will turn the caliper piston backinto the caliper as it compresses it.
Anytime the brake rotor or brake pads are being replaced, the rear caliper piston must be seated (bottomed) to compensate for the new brake rotor or lining. Because the Parking Brake self-adjuster mechanism is attached to the piston, a special seating method is required. The only acceptable method is by rotating the piston back into the bore using Retractor,MILLER Special Tool 8807, . Any other seating method will damage the self-adjuster mechanism.

How do I retract the caliper piston?


Note on rear-caliper piston tool:
Instead of paying $50 for the VW or similar custom tool, you can use a generic $5 import "cube" tool available at most national-chain part stores.
# One side of the cube has 4 prongs. Grind or file off 2 diagonally opposite aka kitty-corner prongs to allow the cube to fit the vw rear brake piston.
# Use with a 3/8" ratchet. It can be easier to fasten the rear caliper back onto the carrier without the rotor in place while using this tool. That way you get a little extra leverage.
# Use as follows: engage the two prongs and turn piston 180° clockwise. Remove the tool. Use a generic caliper tool or a c-clamp and push the piston in about 2mm. Keep alternating back and forth between the cube tool and the c-clamp until piston is almost all the way in. If you are strong enough, you may not even need the c-clamp - just push with the cube tool as you turn. Instead of the cube, you can even use needle-nose pliers, but then you definitely need the c-clamp.
# Even with this special tool, the rear brakes can be rather difficult, so make sure you have plenty of time. I still recommend purchasing or renting the $50 professional tool cause it is much easier to use.
# If you're totally confused by all this, just take your wheels off and look at the brakes up close. Its simpler than it sounds on paper. And get the Bentley publishers shop manual for your car. That book pays for itself after one or two jobs. If your still at lost, Auto Zone has the loner tool you'll need for $50.00 and you'll get it back after you return the tool and they can give you the step by step instructions mentioned above. the piston needs to be screwed back in as it is being compressed. there are several aftermarket tool you can buy to do this from 10 to 200 dollars depending on how nice of a tool you want.also make sure when compressing piston that the hand brake is off all the way.

Unable to compress caliper piston to replace brake pads


If the problem is with the front caliper replace it. If the problem is with the rear caliper you need a tool that will compress the piston back into the caliper by turning it. Most auto parts stores will have a caliper tool for this.

If you can't see diagrams(sometimes happens) let me know and I will get them to you

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Remove the rear wheels.
  2. If equipped, disconnect the brake pad wear sensor from the harness.
  3. Counterhold the lower sliding pin using a thin open-end wrench and remove the caliper-to-sliding pin hex bolt.
  4. Pivot the caliper upward or if necessary remove the upper caliper-to-sliding pin hex bolt.
  5. Using a brake caliper retraction tool, select the appropriate sized piston press arbor and install the tool onto the brake caliper. Following the tool manufacturer's recommendations, use the tool to rotate the caliper piston clockwise as it is pressed into the brake caliper housing, until it is fully retracted.

  2. If equipped, install a new brake pad wear sensor in the pad if the plastic part has been worn through on the old sensor. New sensors are not required unless the wire inside the plastic part has been exposed.
  3. Lubricate the slider bolts with approved brake grease.
  4. Install the brake pads onto the bracket assembly, and then carefully lower the caliper over the caliper mount. Check and make sure that the pad springs are correctly seated.
  5. Replace all removed caliper-to-sliding pin bolts and torque to:
  6. 1990-97 Passat models: 25 ft. lbs. (35 Nm)
  7. 1998-00 Passat models: 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm)
  8. If equipped, connect the brake wear sensor wire to the harness. Check for a good connection as most problems with the sensor circuit are caused by faulty connections. Check that the wire is held by the loop in the dust cover and the connector is held at the clips.
  9. Install the wheels and hand tighten the lug bolts. Lower the vehicle carefully until the tires begin to contact the surface and torque the lug bolts to specification in a crisscross pattern to:
  10. M12 x 1.5 lug bolts: 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm)
  11. M14 x 1.5 lug bolts: 89 ft. lbs. (120 Nm)
