Question about 2001 Dodge Durango

2001 Dodge Durango stuck in 4 wheel-Low. Won't switch back to 2WD

The transmission is stuck in 4 wheel-lo. Putting the switch to 4 wheel high, or 2 wheel drive causes the corresponding light to blink, but the transmission will not switch out of Low. The 4-lo light also remains on.

    Once you realize that Dodge products are basically made from the
    equvalent of cardboard, popsicle sticks, and chewing gum, (and
    low quality cardboard, popsicle sticks, and chewing gum), its easy
    to understand why there are so many problems with their cars.
    I had the same problem with the transmission. Get rid of the car
    NOW! The only parts more poorly engineered than the transmission
    are the steering linkage, the brake system, the electronics, the
    environmental controls, and the drive chain. They do have great
    cup holders though! Gee, I wonder why they are on the verge
    of bankruptcy.

Just to clarify, the "transmission" is not stuck in 4-Lo. It is the "transfer case" that is attached to the transmission that actually engages the 4-Hi and 4-Lo modes. To properly shift your vehicle into 4-Lo, you know that you have to shift the transmission into neutral and slow down to less than 5 mph. Once your vehicle slows down to this range, your can switch your transfer case into 4-Lo mode. Due to the inner workings of the transfer case, the actual shift into 4-Lo may take a few seconds to complete. This is normal and does not signify that there is an issue. All transfer cases that have 4-Lo mode will act this way regardless of the make or model. To make a long story short, to shift out of 4-Lo you must follow the same steps that you took to shift into 4-Lo, just in reverse order. Switch the transfer case to 4-Lo mode if it isn't already there. Slow down to less than 5 mph (your vehicle must be moving, though). Then, shift your car into 4-Hi or 2WD. Give your vehicle several seconds to complete the shift. The transfer case indicator light will flash until it is complete. When it does complete the shift into the new gear mode, you will most likely hear a "clunk" (the range sleeve inside the transfer case disengages from its mating spline) from under your car. Again, any transfer case with 4-Lo (regardless of make or model) will exhibit this same noise. This should help you get out of 4-Lo. It is good practice to shift your car into and out of 4-Lo at least a few times each year to keep all of the splines free of corrosion and build-up. Based on the age of your vehicle, your transfer case may also need a complete flush and some new transmission fluid. Hope this helps.

    well would have been nice to know before but now my shifter just is like broke it moves up and down to 4wd but it dont turn 4wd on think the pin in the shifter broke but i dont know.

That truck has an electric motor that controls the transfer case,
It's a couple hundred dollar part tho. See if you can hear it run
when you shift it in. It's right on the transfer case.
Could even take it off and turn the shaft by
hand to get the range you want.May not be the transfer case
itself.

Smetimes these can be difficult to get out of 4 low. Put the vehicle in neutral and the switch in 2 wheel drive. Give it a minute to shift. If it doesn`t move the vehicle about an inch and try it again. I had an 03 dakota and an 02 durango and they were both like this.

How do you use 4WD on a 1999 dodge durango?


there are 2 systems.
one is a part time system only.the 4x4 locks and is for ice mud and snow.Driving full time will damage the transfer case.The other system is a full time system and the selector says 2wd,4wd part time ,4wd full time and 4 lo. if in full time,it can be driven all the time even on dry roads.The full time is really an all wheel drive system.
the 4low is a very low gear and the main shifter has to be put in neutral and then the transfer case put in 4 low.attempting to put it in 4 low while in "drive" will make a gear grinding noise.
getting out of 4 low is the opposite.shifter to neutral and then put it in 2wd and then in drive.The newer durango has an electronic transfer case with a dial on the dash.The 2002 was available with 2wd,4wd,awd and 4 lo on a switch.The 1999 has the lever on the floor .

My 4x4 is stuck in four wheel low it is shift on the fly and i have already replaced the transfer case motor


Ok here is a long shot but sometimes it will work. Put the 4wd position switch to 4wd Lo, put your transmission in reverse and back up for about 50 yards, stop and put your transmission in neutral, then shift the 4wd to 4wd hi, wait a few seconds and shift the 4wd to 2wd hi, Sometimes the t-case will get stuck and this is how you reset the computer. I have known people that really got their t-cases messed up because they thought that shift on the go meant that they could shift the t-case into 4wd LO while moving but shift on the go is only for 4wd hi the gears will not mesh up fast enough for 4wd LO because the ratio is 1 to 1 . I hope this helps you.

Put your transmission in nuetral then shift back to 4 high then put in park and back to drive.

I just bought a 2001 blazer 4.3 4wd and it was stuck in 4 low


It should tell you on the Shifter whether or not that you can Shift on the Fly. Check the Manual first if there is one in the Truck. Some Models had this and some Did not. Was an Extra from Factory Option.
