Could also be tune up issues, a vacuum leak. I believe there is some sort of vacuum valve(it's been a long time since I have worked on this one) as I remember this was a common problem for stalling at idle but not poor accel, but maybe, as I remember it was a cheap fix.

But I would check the common things first plugs, wires I know that car is very sensitive to vacuum leaks as well.

Sorry I don't have the simple , THIS IS IT !, solution.

Have you ever had the timing belt replaced? If not, this could be the cause.

What would cause my 1996 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with a 350 Vortec engine to backfire on occassion when I crank it?

The distributors on these GM trucks should be replaced at least once a year. Any check engine light on? The crank sensor can cause it to backfire as well.

Backfires and stumbles when gas pedal is floored

There are a lot of diffferent things possible, the backfiring is usually caused by a timing issue. Which could also cause some of your loss of power, but not always. Try checking your fuel pressure to see if there is a clog, also your timing is computer controlled so this means your timing chain is worn spark plugs and wires could be bad or you have a cracked distributor cap rotor bug bad, or even a bad distributor or even as simple as wrong ground placement for motor. Best choice is to start small and then work your way up. Also if disributor has ever been taken out then you will have to reset your oil pump drive because your distributor runs your oil pump with your cam-shaft.

Not sure if you have a 1996 Cadillac Seville or a 1998 Olds Aurora but I would check the Ignition Coil Packs. One or more of them may need to be replaced. Also if you were working on the car and got the wires plugged onto the wrong coils then the firing order sequence would not be correct and this can cause a misfire or backfire conditon.

Ignition wires cannot rest near the primary wire harness of the ignition module, which can cause electrical interference and a no start condition or a misfire condition

On my friends 1997 Cadillac Seville it was easy to replace all 4 coil packs took less than 30 minutes and made the car run much better. Just make sure to get the firing order right. If necessary find a diagram of the correct firing order for you vehicle.

A good place for mail order auto parts is rockauto.com

I have pasted a picture below of what an ignition coil pack looks like

Car stumbles, backfires until warm

You need to replace your distributor. There has been many problems with these. I had the same problem with my 1993 villager and had tried many different things and none worked. I went to a junk yard and got a used distributor and now it runs fine. I would try this before anything alse.

Stumbles and backfires on acceleration

Check the distributor shaft. They have a history of developing finite cracks that causes the condition your describing. Let me know if I can help you with any other info.
