If the engine has a timing belt it may be time for a new one.

What engine are you running? What else have you done to the engine? How did you verify the timing when you replaced the chain and gears? Did you check it with a timing light after you had the engine running? You can be 1 tooth off on cam to crank time and the engine will run fine cold at idle but, once it warms up it will be a whole new ball game.

'97 volvo 960, Orange W-mode arrow blinking, then lost power. What is wrong?

The usual cause of this is a bad PNP switch or gear position sensor.
The "W" is flashing because the transmission control module is stuck in the Winter mode. If you are not familiar with sensor, I suggest you go and have the transmission codes read and reset to begin with and then post back the results.

are you missing spark or fuel when it fails to start ? could be a relay or a list of other things.

I have a 2000 gmc sonoma when the gas gets below a half tank its hard to start it will also die while ur driving it and it backfires when you try to start it but only when it gets below a half tank

There is a metal chamber that is in the fuel pick up line about 1/2 way up designed to take the pulsation out of the pump.If the o rings are bad or the pump has been changed (some mechanics take the pulsator out and replace it with fuel line but if they didn't use fuel injection line it will only last like a few months.)
Either way sounds like the tank has to come out.

After driving a short distance car will not restart. have replaced mas sensor. will not throw a code with mechanic. turns over but does not fire. after about an hour car will restart.

This may be a Crankshaft position sensor. Sometimes what happens with Ford and Oldsmobile is when the engine gets warm the crank position sensor loses its signal therefore not supplying a signal to the coil of coils to fire when they are suppose to.

Starts fine cold then starts and shuts off then starts very hard but will start . could this be fuel pressure regulator what what happens to make for lean air fuel mix during cold start in 80's had a cold...

The computer runs the fuel mixture rich when cold and then leans out as it warms up into closed loop, a common problem is the regulator leaking, if you remove the upper part of the intake and then turn key on and watch for fuel leaks, another trick is to remove the throtlebody and use a light to see if fuel is puddling up on the top of the intake, make sure to dissconnect module connectors to avoid a false start or spark that will cause a fire, i would almost bet its the regulator, hope this helps,
