Question about 1995 Nissan Maxima

1 Answer

Power Steering Fluid

After going for a oil change, I was told my power steering pump has a leak, at this time I'm running very low on funds and can't afford the repair.

Can I use Valvoline max Life Power Steering Fluid with stop leak for my 1995 Maxima?

The back of the bottle says it is compatible with certain import vehicles but does not state any specifics.

Sometimes adding brake fluid to the power steering pump will stop the leak if its not to bad.you may have to keep adding as it leaks down untill you use about a bottle ,before it stops the leak.

extremely hot power steering pumps indicate pump under extreme pressure all the time and high pressure oil movement
could be faulty pressure relief valve in the pump
as to removal of the pump disconnect the oil lines and remove ant mounting bolts

Power steering

Check power steering reservoir for fluid. Also check for any leaking oil brom your steering rack. If pump is belt driven check your belt for tightness and any cracking. Any cracking and it is time for a new belt. I am going to bet on low fluid though.

You have a leak somewhere.. If filling the pump does not stop the noise then the pump is going bad. Be sure the leak is at the pump before you change the pump or else the new pump might go bad as well from being low on fluid.

Its likely that filling the pump back up should stop the noise though unless you have run it a while its empty.

The steering is hard to move and the steering warning light is on. Please let me know what to do I need to urgently resolve it.

The servo unit on the steering has failed . Look inside the engine bay for oil leaks - if none are present then the entire steering rack will have to be replaced - the internal seals have failed.

Take the car to another mechanic. The steering is likely going stiff because the belt is loose, that's why it's squeaking and slipping on the power steering pump pulley. The mechanic should have checked and tightened the belt. The pumps rarely fail. If you have a gas leak, it must be repaired immediately and it depends what is wrong that will determine cost. Go to a smaller shop that has been around along time or get a referral from friends that have had good luck with a shop that does repairs, not just oil changes.

While turning the steering wheel there is a whining sound from the motor. What is it?

you can hear your power steering pump working and if it's whining, it may be low on fluid.
Check the fluid level with the engine running and be very careful of moving or rotating parts.
Locate the pump and check the level (the cap will usually have a dipstick to measure the level attached to the cap and you read it the same way as your engine oil dipstick). DO NOT overfill the pump as it will just leak out and cause other issues.
If the level is very low, top it up then work the steering from side to side a few times then recheck the level. Careful, power steering fluid can get very hot!!
If the fluid in the pump looks dark or black, take the vehicle to your local mechanic and have the fluid replaced and the system flushed.

they may have loosened the power steering pump to take off the belt and not put it back right. They may have overtightened the belt which has worn the bearings out on the steering pump and made it start leaking from the bearings...
