Maybe thermostat, or bad water pump, maybe a pluged up heater core, take hoses off blow them backwards to see if any thing comes out.

I have a 1995 Dodge Ram 1500 4/4 starts fine runs for about 10-15 minutes then it starts cutting out and backfiring can anybody have any idea

the indications are that there is a electronic failure ocurring from overheating component
areas to check will be ignition control module, coil or ECM if efi engine
check that the coil is correct running voltage and is not a 7 volt coil running on 12 volts continuous as that can cause coil problems from overheating after a short period of time

Your radiator's core may be constricted with rust particles/debris. Clean and flush the radiator with a heavy duty cooling system cleaner. You'll need to remove the thermostat temporarily and follow the directions on the label.

In my country, most overheating issues on Volkswagen models are resolved by:
  • entirely removing the thermostat (not applicable in cold regions);
  • wiring the fan to switch on once the engine is running (with or without the A/C or heater being turned on);
  • replacing the radiator thermal switch for the fan to a lower temp.
As to the "check engine light", the correct procedure would be to have the engine management computer scanned for fault logs. The error codes would point to the probable area(s) to check/clean/replace.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.
