I don't know what kind of car or truck you have, but I had that same thing happen a several times.
You likely have a inside door latch theat is messed up.
The last one I had , the problem was a tiny spring, (hardly much bigger that the coil spring inside a ball point pen), had fallen down inside the doort and was lying on the bottom of the inside of the door.
You might be needing a new or used door latch.
If you do not take it to a body shop and have them open it for you, you will most likely need to "tear" the inside door panel apart and take a good flashlight and try to "trip" the door latch through the holes in the metal door that are inside the door panel.
You may find this really hard to do, and it may take you many hours of trying.
This has been my experience, and I've had to do this about 5 times in 25 years.
You would eventually need to get a used inner door panel to put back on the inside of the door.
Be blessed.

There is a cable that attaches to the inside door latch release handle. The plastic that retains this cable is most likely broken. I have seen this before. If the retainer is not holding the cable sheath correctly, the entire cable moves when the handle is pulled and does not release the door latch.
Remove the door panel and inspect this cable. You will see 2 cables (one is for the door lock). If the plastic is broken, you will need a new interior handle assembly.
Hope this is helpful!!

take the bezel off around th door handle. take the screw out of the armrest. pull out the window switches and pull out on the door handle and pull up .disconnect the last two plugs then you can see the whole door handle

It sounds like the linkage connecting the door handle to the latch has disengaged....you'll need to remove screws that are by the door handle, arm rest, under door and side of door and then gently pull back on the panel as there will also be retaining clips attached and you don't want to break them. You'll need to lift the door panel upwards in order to get it off the window ledge. You can then pull off the weather seal in order to see the inside of the door....

I have been dealing with the same problem and I'm a little further than you are. You need two people to do this job. Open the front door and it will give you access to the hinge pin. If I remember correctly you can pop off the snap rings and pull the pins. This will allow you to open the door just enough to get the interior panel off the door to allow you access to the actuator. Unfortunately, both my rear door actuators have been done twice in the last 5 weeks, But they are seized in the locked position again. I,m pretty sure its not just the actuators that are bad. Something else is causing this and that is why I'm here. Good luck with that one.
