While driving suddenly all dash board lights will come on and all gauges except for the fuel gauge will stop working.
You don't say what the make model and year is, but generally the gauges get power from the same place the gas gauge does. Each gauge is grounded thru a sending unit or switch.
So my guess would be a problem inside the instrument cluster.
Stephen, thanks for your reply and sorry I wasn't more specific. The make is Jaguar, model is X-Type and year is 2005. When this happens all dash board lights come on and all gauges stop working except for the fuel gauge. Also when this happens when the car is turned off it won't start again that day. This morning the car started but I noticed that the backup lights stopped working when the dash board lights came on and the gauges stopped working. Any ideas?
I'll stick with my original statement, something in the cluster or the wiring harness going to the cluster. If it weren't for the backup light issue I would have suggested the key switch, but I would start with a check of power going to the cluster. You may need a shop manual to get the wiring diagrams involved.
Thanks. I'll get a shop manual and follow-up. Thanks for your suggestion.

SOURCE: The gauges have stopped working ? Fuse under dash seems to be OK ?
Behind the dash is what they call a constant voltage regulator. It controls the guages. It's small and located behind the dash near speedo.
SOURCE: dash board gauges not working on 01 aztek
open the driver side door there should be a panel right inside the door crease. if not they are up under the dash It's been so long since we sold our aztek I don't remember exactly but one of those two locations.
SOURCE: The lights on my dash board flicker on and off then turn off.
I had the same problem some time ago, lights would go on and off, odometer appeared to stop counting at times rpm gauge would work and then not... power steering would off and on work and head lights would blink on and off when in driving light mode (off position).. The fix for me was I had to have the dash computer replaced (about $500). After doing this around 50k miles ago all the gremlins seem to have remained gone.. Hope this helps
SOURCE: Everything works fine on my vehicle EXCEPT today
Check the fuse for those items that don't work.
