If the smoke is white smoke and you have it after it has run for a while or when you stop at a stop sign or light it is one of two things or possibly both. I have a 2003 GMC 3500 that had the same proble. It turned out to be a combination of Injector being bad and Glowplugs. Injectors are covered up to 200,000 miles but not the glowplugs. I bought 4 glowplugs of the internet for 10.49 a piece AC Delco New. The dealer replaced all 8 injectors and 8 glowplugs. I paind for 4 GP's and the installation 213.00. Truck has more power and NO white smoke you might need to take it to the dealer. The test for the injectors is about 85.00 but well worth the expense

we cant guess all that?????? Injection system types vary by ALL THAT.
that can be lots of things
but the turbo , stops the smoke.. (adds air during times when old non turbo diesels smoked normally)
it could be a bad turbo or a leaking injectors
why not get a mech to service the car.? guessing will not work.
There can be several reasons for this. You can have worn valve stem seals on the valves, which may change with warm oil, or you have worn oil rings in the cylinders.
A compression test when the engine is cold would reveal if the piston rings are worn. Another possibility could be a bad head gasket which leaks oil when cold and then seals when the heads warm. A compression test would also diagnose this.
Sounds like it might be blowing gases into the water jacket. Blown head gasket?
I would fill system up, start engine with rad cap closed. Rev up COLD engine and then check the upper rad hose for pressure. Squeeze it. If it seems to have pressure already, its likely head gasket. Put a towel over rad cap and take it off slowly, listen for pressure release while still cold engine. (Bad sign) Then wait for it to warm up and themostat to open, rev the engine and look for bubbles in the flow of coolant which burst with a little puff of steam or smoke. If neither of these happens, that is a good sign of not being head gasket. But it may be occuring only at high pressure, "under load". Dont know how much load that means..
PS. I'm not really an expert here, (turbo diesels) just general knowlege.
sounds about right for what i think it is ,now remove the EGR valve and make a gasket from a coca cola can and do not cut the middle out ,so it blocks it off completely then try it as i am almost positive this is your problem .
oil drop from the valve stem (from engine head to cyclinders)
diesel soot collect inside the exhaust system.
I will take a 5-10 minutes high rpm (not redline) ran on the highway.
Pay close attention to the rear view mirror and look for black diesel soot.
I will use Diesel Cleen or similar product to condition the fuel. (keep moisture down)
Use the recommended amount of SEAFOAM oil additive to condition the valve stem seal/rubber parts.
I can not rule out excessive blown by.
Can you get a diesel compression tester?
When was the last valve adjustment?
Please post the actual odometer on the engine and I will follow up on it.
