When shifting into various gears, randomley it will feel very hard to actually push the shifter into the next gear. It will make an almost grinding sound once in a while and feel as if the stick vibrates and refuses to go into it's spot in gear. I'm certain I have the clutch down properly when shifting. This is my first standard Vehicle so maybe I am doing something wrong, or is it the car? It only happens a few times a week. I also notice a handfull of times a week it is extra difficult to pull the stick into reverse, I know it is suppose to be a little difficult but this seems a bit too much. It sounds like a grinding or clunking sound beneath me when trying to put it into Reverse (not everytime). What do you think? Also last time I went for service at the Subaru dealer, they said everything seemed fine. I'm assuming the problem did not occur in the short time they had the car. Thanks in advance.

not sure on the set up of whether its rods or cables on this model for your gear linkages but sounds like one has either detached or broken which should be a relatively easy fix and not too expensive.Get a friend to move through gears while you look under to see whats moving and whats not.

I would suggest hat you replace the timing belt. The noise that you hear is the belt.

you need to have the shifting cable lubricated or replaced.
