i have a 1989 cherokee pioneer auto,4.0. my tranny starts to go foward and reverse, but then slips. you can here it cliking.I changed fluid an d filter but it still won't move. this happens in 2wd and 4wd.
i'm sorry to be the bearer of real bad news but, this recently happened to me. the planetary gear assembly in your transmission is shot. the transmission needs to be rebuilt. depending on which transmission you have, it will cost in the neighborhood of 1800 to 2200 dollars. you could see about a used tranny from a salvage yard but as i understand it the transmissions in these jeeps have a life expectancy of around 160 to 180 thousand miles so, be mindful of the mileage on the replacement tranny if you go the salvage yard route. just so you know, the transmission will operate in 4x4 low but it isn't good for the front or rear differential to drive it on paved roads in 4x4 low for very long.
