1993 Ford explorer.Began idling rough and surging

The test connector is in a holder at the back bottom of the fuse/relay box on the passenger side fender well. There are 2 parts to it: the main connector and the ground, you will need both connected to the diagnostic tool to get the codes.
Check your IAC (Idle Air Control) valve on the side of the intake. These get carbon fouled and tend to stick causing high rpm for extended times. Also the EGR valve should be checked (under the intake) as it will cause rough idle or stalling near idle.

97 expedition 5.4 doesnt idle very good

Surging idle is usually caused by vacuum leaks. Ford 5.4L engines are notorious for the PCV hose elbow leaking back behind the throttle body.

The PCV tube goes from the right (passenger) side valve cover and loops around behind the valve body. Inspect this hose on BOTH ends.

Have a 2003 ford focus. idling problem

if you have 14 volts or more at the battery at 1000 rpms, the battery & alternator are fine. If you get the same surge when you turn the bower motor on high speed, it is just the normal load on the alternator as it puts out more current. The engine is supposed to compensate by kicking up the idle. It does this through the IAC, idle air control. You may need to clean the IAC passages and the throttle body passages. I also would clean the MAF sensor heated wires with carb cleaner or MAF sensor cleaner. The MAF is in the iar intake hose and has a 2 or 3 wire connector going to it. The heated wires are in the air stream. Then disconnect the battery for 2 hours to clear the "Keep alive memory"
It will relearn after you drive for 10 miles. May run rough for that time.
good luck.

1991 Camry with 2.0 L, 4 cylinder. When it is warm

Early 90's had a thing called Idle Stabilizer valve. It should sit on the top of the motor, some models had it sitting on the side of motor.Anyway this part is about 4-5 inches long, abou 1-1.5 in diametar and it has vacuum hoses connection and electrical conection.I'n most cases, the diaphragm could be dirty, thus restrictin internal part to slide back and forward. If you are handy, locate the ISV and remove it.Use some brake parts cleaner( can use up to 1 can) and clean it good. When cleaned spray, just a spritz of of WD40 on each opening and reinstall it.If problem still persist, you will have to purchase a new one that will run you about $200-325 buck.Hope I could help.

I have a 1994 ford Aspire Fuel injected that is having timing and idle surges when at idle. I can’t set timing or idle because of the surging, even when jumper ST1 to ground on the diagnostic port. Only...

I've been trying to get the timing procedures for this model, as I have a 94 aspire. sounds like you have something (a timing light) hooked up and can see the the timing mark moving, but I assume when you say you've shorted st1 to ground, that eliminates the computer control of idle. So the the computer is out of the equation, right? Or is it not electronic ignition?
I have eliminated some idle roughness by cleaning and setting spark plug gap, new air filter, and if its time, a new gas filter. Then, cleaned the sensors inside the air filter compartment, and the intake manifold. I'd heard of using wd40 on the same part of a taurus referred to as a oxygen sensor. But eventually, cleaning the plate that opens to let oxygen into the intake manifold is a good idea. I have 160,000 miles on my aspire ( 4 door hatchback 5-speed manual) and it gets 49 mpg on trips. I replaced the gear oil with mercon dextron last winter, It may have helped increase a few mpg. Also, check for vaccum leaks in your vaccum hoses. that's all I can think of right now.
