rx8 have a history of coil packs going bad internally and grounding out. best way to check if theyre bad is to pull the packs and inspect the back side. if you have discolorationg on the back side your packs are bad or are going to be bad soon. inspect the plugs if they are fouled or burnt replace them along with the coil packs.its a good idea to replace the wires too. and do not use cheap aftermarket parts. this will only cause more problems in the future. use oem or performance parts.

Find an inductive pickup indicator for spark. Place on distributor cap to see if spark is at coil internal tower. If no spark at internal tower, look at ignition module or pickup coil. Ignition modules are prone to failure on 626's. But if you have spark at tower but not at the wire end, then your rotor is gone.

any wires not plugged into there respective places, any sensors the old engine had that this one don't, did you use the old distributor for your coil setup,I think it might be, luck

One of the most common reasons for the RX-8's Check Engine light to turn on is the gas cap not being on tightly enough. Turn off the car, make sure the gas cap is tight, and check to see if the light is still on. You may need to drive the RX-8 for several miles after tightening the gas cap before the light turns off.
