Question about Nissan Navara

Open Question

Navara Gearbox noise

Navara 2.7 diesel, 2001, 2 wheel drive, Limited slip diff. 170 000km. Has a distictive whine in 5th gear sometimes worse than others.  While driving it sounds like it is coming from the rear of the vehicle but only really occurs in 5th gear so I guess it can't be the diff.  I changed the gearbox oil about 4 months ago because of the noise but it made no difference.  I did notice a small amount of metal fur on the drain plug magnet.  I'm thinking 5th gear shaft bearings as the noise is relatively high pitched.  Only other thing is the driveshaft but I would expect the noise across the gear range.  So assuming it is the gearbox, has anyone had such experience and is there a good website for step by step instructions. It's been 25 years since I pulled a box.  Ta   Nigel
I couldnt find Navara in the drop list so have selected Frontier as the closest.  I'm from New Zealand

Wow this a touchy. There are several options to look into. Don't be mistaken with always the most obvious. Sometimes the problems occur right in front of our eyes and we still cant find it. A option i'm thinking is, and i'm not over ruling that what you mentioned, but is to jack up the vehicle with all wheels in the air. Use safety when doing this. Fire up and put her into gear try going through all the gears. Rev only to about 2000 rpm. Get out and try to listen all around the vehicle. Listen to wheel bearings, actually after a drive you place your hand on the wheel hub and feel for high temperature. Wheel bearings get hot if they are on the way out. Listen for grinding near the diff sections, Listen in the engine compartment. Use a long steel rod or something place the one end on the gearbox near the engine and place your ear on the other side. My guess is your crown wheel and pinion on the diff is on the way out. Yet difficult to establish, but when you go through all the gears maybe even look at gearbox syncs. A good way to establish if the pinion of diffs are the culprit is to get under the vehicle when on the ground, engine switched off, and in neutral handbrake down, is to feel propshaft play on the pinion. It shouldnt rotate more than 2mm either way.

2001 f150 jerks really hard when turning

You probably have a limited slip differential. Sounds like the clutch plates in the differential are sticking when you turn corners. I would change the gear oil and add limited slip diferential addative to the diff along with fresh gear oil. If limited slip this will cure your problem.

Makes a loud whining noise and is slipping when

Verify that your trans fluid is at the correct level. When if at all was the trans last serviced?

If fluid is low, try bringing it up to proper level with Valvoline ATF+4 fluid. You need to used either fluid from a dealer, or the valvoline brand which is approved by Dodge.

I have a 06 dodge ram 3500 with Cummings diesel.

you have what is known as an open diff. or worn out clutch packs in a limited slip. most makers put in a open diff because its cheaper and handles better. if you did not pay for it on your invoice your stuck with stock unless you put it in your self.

VW GOLF 1.4 1999 S. Gearbox makes whining sound at idle. once clutch is pressed sound goes. car drives fine with no noise in 1st-4th gears. unable to select 5th gear.. just grinds and wont engage. VW Golf...

No good news on this one I think
Your whining sound problem is the Layshaft bearings in the gearbox are badly worn. It also seems that the baulk rings are damaged on 5th gear.

I have whine noise from gear box in 2nd gear 3rd gear and 4 th gear it still makes noise when free wheeling 2 but not as bad can u help

being a renault, the n/s drive shaft holds the oil in box, it splits, replace then try oil some times they do thousands of miles others not, 5th gear over hears and braeks teeth off, then very noisey. if getting a box there is a tag on top, silver, near the diff, this has to be matched to other gearbox as so many different boxes.
