Question about 1999 Dodge Ram 2500 4WD

Resetting engine light

I recently forgot to plug the block heater in one night and had to have someone help jump my truck. But it's running fine now, it's charging fine and it's running at operating temp, and it's oil pressure is good, but the engine light is on and it wont shut off. I'm trying to figure out how to reset the engine light, because I'm sure it was because the battery was drained hard when trying to start cold.

IT costs nothing to have a load test done on the battery to check for a dead cell which your problems point to. While the engine is running the alternator will be handling the power requirement but the battery will not supply the power required to start.

Started running bad when I turned on the heater

misfire can be caused by a few things. weak spark, low fuel pressure, to much fuel, vaccum leak. a simple check on this engine is to remove vaccum line from fuel pressure regulator, on fuel rail, driver side of engine. if you crank engine, and fuel leaks out vaccum port on regulator, its ruptured and causing rich fuel mixture. try that and let me know.

Why is there a electric plug under the hood of my 2003 impala

Hi, someone has likely installed a block heater for cold climates. In Northern climates, the car is plugged in overnight to keep the engine from freezing. If you have recently moved to the north, talk to your neighbors about how to use a block heater in the local area. If you bought the car used and do not live in cold climates, you can ignore the heater.
Thanks for using FixYa.

Hi maryann.

The first thing to check is the battery itself. You should try jump starting the car or replacing the battery with a fully charged one. If that does not work, then you check ignition by verifying that the dash is turning on and that there is voltage to coil; you check if starter motor is running; check sparks, fuel pressure and power to injectors. If all that is OK there is even more testing to be done.

Start by replacing the battery, or jump starting by connecting battery terminals to a different car's battery. If it still does not start, check if starter motor is running. If it runs, check if there is spark by disconnecting spark plug wire and putting the connector near to engine block.

Find someone local to help you doing all that.

Good luck.

Ginko.

New battery, new fuel pump. All electrical systems work fine, every time the outside temp is less than 30 degrees, vehicle will not start. Turns over fine, just will not start.

Have a block heater installation the day light things warm up at night it gets really dry cold that's when the block heater keeps the engine warm enough to start.

I have changed plugs using the platinum plugs and the problem don't go away. These plugs can make a car run worse in some cases. I have found it best to use the OEM or a step above on 4 cylin and 6 cylin engines. The Plats work fine in 8 cylin engines. You could also have a bad plug wire. The plug wire could be jumping spark. At night, open the hood, start the car with lights off. Look around the plug wires for sparks jumping. If a wire is bad, the spark is leaving the wire and grounding itself to the nearest metal causing rough engine idle and misfire.

Replace spark plug wires and plugs. Sometimes old wires will arc to the engine block, causing missfire. Check the wires at night with lights off and engine running, if they're bad, you'll defenitely see them arcing to the engine. if they are...replace.

Would bad spark plugs on any car make it shake and make the check engine light turn on?

Yes bad plugs/ worn plugs /oiled up plugs/ or HTleads with spark jumping will all cause the engine to run rough, and not idle and when it does it runs rough enough to break the engine mounts.
When its dark at night start the engine and look under the bonnet do you see sparks jumping if yes replace the worn parts if no then check plugs and if light grey there ok /if black through away.
So check it out and let me know how you get on . Ron
