Question about 2004 Mazda 3

Open Question

2004 mazda 3 2.3l with knocking noise

I have a 2004 Mazda 3 with a 2.3l motor that has right around 100k miles on it. The only problem I am having with it is that it starts knocking on the top end as soon as it gets warm. I took it to a mechanic and his guess is that it might be a valve but I am looking for the real answer. Any suggestions are deeply appreciated!!!

I would check the sway bar linkages, they are usually the first to go, and they are only $40. Its an easy 'do it yourself' project, remove the old one with torches or a grinder (with a small cutting wheel). You can also use a vise grip and sockets but it takes longer.

You can't tell these are damaged until you remove the part. I change mine every 100 000km or so.

SOURCE: Check engine light/2001 Mazda Millenia

The check engine light comes on when there is a problem with your engine and throws a code which it then stores. That code can be "read" by an OBDI/OBDII scanner and should give you the info you need. If it was scanned and the codes "read" the check engine light should of been re-set. If your car is running well have your mechanic re-set it; if it comes on again take it and have it checked again. No system is fool proof and there may still be a problem. Hope this helps.

Sounds like you are right on the apex seals. Oil coming from the intake is probably from excessive blowby pressure in the engine due to bad seals. The battery could be bad from age, is it the original battery?

My 2006 Mazda 3 is getting close to 100,000 miles and I was wondering what surprises in repairs do I have in store?

It depends on the Maintance records.
Could need a timing belt
Alternator and Starters get tired at around 100K
Radiator can get clogged if it has not been flushed regularly
Brakes are an ongoing maint cost.
The tranny should be flushed

Not a good thing. More than likely it's the rod or main bearings.

Stick a hose in your exhaust. Run the hose into the car. Shut yourself inside with doors and windows shut. Meditate on the problem and it will resolve itself.

Front wheel noise

Does this knocking noise mostly happen when you are turning the car? If so this is caused by a worn CV joint. It's not an expensive fix, but I would rather go to a mechanic than attempt it without prior knowledge of how to repair this. I hope this helps.
