Question about 1994 Mercury Villager
My parents' 1994 villager had the same problem. It was a cracked part internal to the transmission - i.e. an overhaul at a cost of about $3000 Canadian. Of course, try the obvious / easy fixes first such as checking the fluid level and all sensors, shift linkage, etc.
