Peugeot 406 HDi jumps out of 5th gear

Can you get to 5th gear without removing the gearbox? There is a plate on the end and I'm sure I read somewhere that it is possible to repair 5th without dropping the box. I think the gearbox is the ML5C but I can't find a part number plate on it. The car is a 1999 Peugeot 406 HDi (110) Manual gearbox.

It only comes out of gear when slowing down. While there is load on the box it stays in gear. Peugeot dealer reckons its an 8 hour job to take off and replace the box. Cost about £1000 if they repair the gearbox. Seems a bit too much for a 10 year old car.

I have the same problem on my vectra. What I wanted to say was this, mine started doing like yours just when lifting off the throttle. But it very quickly got worse, I currently have to hold mine in 5th when I want to use it. Half way through a long journey I was on cruise control in 5th and it just jumped out - without coming off the throttle. After that, it just won't stay in there on it's own.

Usually it's the syncro gears that are worn. Quite often 5th gear is on the end and just behind an access plate so they could be changed without dropping the box if this is the case.

1st and 5th gear jumps out of it's position. Revers gear do's not engage gear from time to time

if this is a manual gearbox then its the indent springs in the selector rod movement inside the gearbox and this will involve removing the gearbox if i have correctly located the fault ,but without the make and model of vehicle i cannot say for certain as it could be the gearchange mechanism movement inside the cars cab and if tis cable then a outer sheaf on a cable could be loose and come out of its crimped holder

Gearbox interchange between cars

406 comes normally with a gearbox model BE3 of 5 speed (as limited were with 6 speed). As late models of 405 and 306 are using the same gearboxes. Mazda 2.0i zx was sharing the same gearbox (i don't know exactly the model year).
Anyway, you need the exact gearbox model to find out which car model else were built with these types of gearboxes. Manual gearboxes with same models can be exchanged from any car or van and have nothing to do with car ECUs.
