1999 Buick lesabre with fuel line leak at rear of car. Looks like it is leaking near the fuel tank where the metal line to the gas tank and the hose connects (coupling). Can I just replace this hose down to the fuel filter or does it need a new o-ring at the coupling. Also hoe do you release the pressure in the fuel line? Thanks

Hi, the metal tube is called a gas line and it is connected to the gas filter. The metal cylinder is the fuel filter. The fuel filter can be replaced and the lines also. here's the thing about the lines. you will have to replace the whole line Assembly. its one whole piece that runs along the body of the car.

*before you do any work with the fuel system make sure the battery negative terminal is disconnected and the fuel pressure is relieved!*

sounds like the leak is coming from the fuel line that screws into the fuel filter. if the leak is in the line itself you will need to either have it replaced or splice in your own section of pipe with approved fittings as the fuel system carried anywhere from 40 to 70 psi of fuel pressure. (not recommended)

if the leak is where the tube connects to the filter you can try tightening line to the filter or replacing the filter.

hope this helps!

My suggestion is first get away from fixya.com because I have never found a real solution at this site, ever. Fixya.com wastes your time every time. They say they can help but all that they do is help you to insignificant ads. I will not give you the solution because I don't want to break fixya.com's losing streak.

Where is the fuel pump and fuel filter at

The fuel pump and strainer are located inside the fuel tank.

There are three possible locations for this component due to different production dates/locations: under hood, passenger side, rear engine area, below firewall, mounted in fuel line or under vehicle, passenger side, below seating area, mounted on frame in fuel line or under vehicle, driver side, below rear seating area, mounted on frame in fuel line

Easiest method to find, follow the fuel pump lines from the tank forward, you'll find the filter.

If you change the filter, it's not a bad idea to put a little Gumout fuel injector cleaner directly into that new filter, about 1/2 full before reinstalling, that will give your injectors a quick clean. It can cause a short sputter or two but I've never seen it cause a problem and it does help clean the fuel system quickly.

You'll also want to remember to turn the key on for 3 seconds, off for 3 seconds, alternating until the fuel pressure builds before trying to start the vehicle, after repairs are made to either the pump or the filter.

Use caution when removing lines, pressure and flammable !

Good Luck
