Question about 2001 BMW 325

Transmission intermittently goes into the limp mode

If I shut the car off and then restart it sometimes clears the problem and the transmission functions normal and shifts fine. Do I have a trans problem. One place told me the trans needs to be rebuilt. Another said the code indicates just replacing the Turbine speed Sensor.

A tech rep in Chicago for the ZF trans said it might be something simple like a corroded sensor connector or a loose ground or loose 5 volt connection.

The check engine light intermittently comes on and the left signal alarm intermittently comes on. Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot and what the problem might be.

You need a code reader. It does sound more like an electrical prob than a trans failure you could rebuild the whole trans and it just does it again. Invest in the full shop manual including the electrical one. I would get on the BMW fanatic forumns,

probably not if it is limp mode
the ECM puts the car in limp mode to prevent serious problems in the engine or transmission
could be no coolant, sump oil , transmission oil etc
run the fault codes and find the reason for the mode

Where is the speed sensor located on a 2002 Chrysler Concorde

Beware speed sensors seldom fail. Chrysler products transmission have a limp mode where they only shift to second gear when something goes wrong and many times when nothing is wrong. If the speedometer fails it goes to limp. If an OBD scan gives a transmission code sometimes clearing the code will end the problem. When driving if the transmission shifts one time as it should the sensor is working.

have the code pulled from the computer.if its going into limp in mode then there should be a code for the transmission.you could have a solenoid problem that acts up intermittantly.a code will help alot to know which direction to find the problem.

My volvo 850 transmition cut out on me. For a while the arrow on the dash was blinking and it would switch to limp mode. I brought it in to be looked at and they didn't find a problem. Last time it...

Any time the transmission goes into the limp mode, it generates an error code that tells what caused it to go into limp mode. It could be something as simple as a loose connection on a sensor for the transmission computer. The code would explain which sensor was sending the correct signal.
By restarting the car you are resetting the transmission computer, clearing the limp condition.

1996 dodge avenger when cold, the transmission go in limp mode

Is the vehicle's Check Engine Light on? It should briefly light up when you turn the key on (before you start the engine) to show that the light is working correctly. Based on what I've read I believe you should have one or more trouble codes. A place like AutoZone will read the trouble codes for you for free, and you can look them up here - http://www.engine-light-help.com/generic-check-engine-light-codes.html

Car judders when in drive also switches on cetre console with S E and W flash. also an arrow flashes on bottom right of instrument cluster

Your automatic transmission is in limp mode. It detected a problem and set itself into limp mode which is basically the same as W or WINTER mode. It's computer should have stored a code that will tell the service technician what caused the error. Sometimes shutting the engine off and restarting will reset the transmission.

Transmission locked up, felt like it was stuck in second or third gear. not shifting. shut engine off and restarted , shifting properly now. what causes this.

It was a temporary fault that put the car into limp mode (a safeguard operating condition designed to protect the transmission in case of serious failure). Sometimes a transient fault can occur, and the car goes into limp mode just to be sure it's not for real. Shutting off and restarting the car is the usual way to clear the fault and return the car to normal operation - if the problem was real, the car would've stayed in limp mode after restart, or gone into limp once you started driving again. I wouldn't sweat this one, since it went right back to normal operation.
