I am not sure of the size, but you should be able to reach it with an adjustable wrench, and it shouldn't be tight at all. Hope it works.

How to Replace Rear Wheel Bearing/Hub Assembly on a 2nd generation Taurus

The following procedure is for a Ford Taurus (VIN S), with rear drum brakes and ABS.

1. Loosen wheel lug nuts, raise rear of vehicle, and support securely on jack stands. Block front wheels and remove rear wheels.

2. Remove brake drum (parking brake must be off).

3. Remove and clean ABS Sensor (Torx E8) with a spritzled rag.

4. Remove grease cap from hub.

5. Remove and discard hub retaining nut (36 mm). This is a compound nut, comprised of several nuts inside a metal cage. Use a 36 mm axle nut socket (e.g., OEM 25206). Many auto parts stores will lend you this socket. A 1/2-inch drive air impact wrench or breaker bar is necessary to remove the nut.

6. Remove wheel bearing/hub assembly from spindle. It easily comes off by hand.

7. Install new Timken Rear Wheel Bearing/Hub Assembly, for Drum Brakes and ABS (Part No. 512162). Tighten new axle spindle nut (Dorman 05114) 221 lb.-ft., replace grease cap, and button everything up.

Notes:
  • To prevent damage to the spindle during removal, remove adjusting nut locking key from spindle keyway under adjusting nut prior to nut removal.
  • A slight movement of the nut will loosen the locking key so that a magnet can be used for removal.
  • During the front wheel bearing adjustment procedure, align the closest two holes in the wheel bearing adjusting nut with the center of the spindle keyway slot.
  • Advance the nut to the next hole if required. To ensure proper wheel retention, install adjusting nut locking key in alignment with spindle keyway and insert into locknut holes.
  • The double humped portion must be completely seated and flush with the locknut assembly.
  1. Raise and support front of vehicle.
  2. Remove wheel and tire assembly.
  3. Remove lug nut stud retainer washers, then the locking hub assembly.
  4. Remove snap ring from end of spindle shaft.
  5. Remove axle shaft spacer, needle thrust bearing and bearing spacer.
  6. Remove cam assembly, thrust washer and needle thrust bearing from wheel bearing adjusting nut.
  7. Remove the adjusting nut lock key, then the nut.
  8. Remove the rotor and replace the bearings, races and seal as necessary.
  9. Torque nut to 35 ft lb while rotating hub and rotor assembly.
  10. Back off adjusting nut 1/4 turn, then torque nut to 16 inch lbs.
  11. Align nearest hole in adjusting nut with center of spindle keyway slot. If necessary, advance nut to the next hole.
  12. Install locknut needle bearing, thrust washer and cam assembly.
  13. Install bearing thrust washer, needle thrust bearing, axle shaft spacer and snap ring.
  14. Install locking hub assembly and retainer washers, then the wheel and tire assembly.
  15. Ensure wheel endplay on spindle is 0.000-0.003 inch.

How do i change the front wheel bearrings on a 1999 sonoma 2 wheel drive?


The bearing is in the hub.. Here are some instructions for that:
  • The wheel bearing is installed in the wheel hub assembly and is serviced by replacement only.

  • You may need Torx sockets to remove the bearing assembly bolts.


  • Raise and support the front of the vehicle safely using jackstands.

    Remove the tire and wheel assembly.

  • At the wheel hub, remove the cotter pin and retainer, then loosen and remove the castle nut and the thrust washer. In order to hold the hub from turning when loosening the nut, insert a drift through the caliper and into the rotor vanes. Remove the brake caliper and support it aside using wire or a coat hanger. Make sure the brake line is not stretched or damaged.

  • Remove the brake rotor from the wheel hub.

  • Remove the bolts retaining the hub/bearing assembly to the knuckle, then carefully pull the assembly from the splined end of the halfshaft. If available, use J-28733-A or B, or an equivalent spindle remover to prevent damage to the shaft or hub/bearing assembly.


  • Remove the cotter pin from the drive axle end nut and retainer


    Remove the retainer for access to the end nut


    Loosen the drive axle nut-here the caliper is installed so a drift could be inserted to keep the disc from spinning

    The front wheel bearing is a hub and bearing assembly. To remove you will.... 1. Remove the tire 2. Remove the axle nut. You can put a punch in the fins of the rotor to keep the assembly from turning while you rmove the nut. You can can do the same thing when you torque the axle nut. 3. Remove the caliper and rotor. 4. Unplug the abs sensor if equipped. 5. Remove the three bolts that hold the hub to the knuckle. 6. Rmove the hub. If you need torque specs let me know and i'll get them for you. It is absolutely critical that you torque the axle nut to the proper spec!

    Front wheel bearing repair


    There's no repair to the hub bearing assembly, seal unit, to replace first remove axle nut ( 32 or 36 mm) might need some one to step on brake while removing nut, so it done turn on you, remove front brake caliper and caliper bracket, then remove brake rotor, on back side of hub bearing there three bolt's, remove, hub bearing should slide out, some time with a little help from a hammer, install new hub bearing.

    It's nearly impossible unless you have a good air compressor and a powerful 1/2" or larger drive impact gun.The reason is you have to remove the cv axle nut and axle out of the way before removing the bearing and hub.The axle nut requires a couple hundred foot pounds to remove.The procedure is:Jack vehicle safely off the ground,remove wheel and tire.Remove axle retaining nut.Remove balljoint nut and bolt,pry down on lower control arm,and disengage balljoint and lower arm from spindle.Now the axle can be released from the hub,but leave the other end of the axle in the trans,just set off to the side out of the way.At this point,there are two ways to change the bearing.The wheel bearing is a double roller,cartridge type with the hub containg the wheel studs,pressed into the bearing.Remove the entire spindle assembly from the suspension strut,OR leave the spindle attached to the strut,and remove the bearing and hub from the spindle.Some guys swear by taking the spindle to a press,and pressing the bearing assembly out with a bottle jack.I just use a bushing driver set,and ball peen hammer,and remove the hub from the bearing...then remove the snap ring retaing the bearing in the spindle,then drive the bearing out of the spindle with the hammer and drivers.There you have it.Reverse procedure for reassembly
